Who’s Expanding and Who’s Closing Up Shop? Keep Up With Change

Do you ever feel like you have your head buried down into your daily life—running your business, taking care of your family, and tending to other responsibilities—that you have no idea what is going on in the “real” world. Well, that might not be what’s best for your business—it actually pays to know what is going on in your market, the community, and the world at large. It really does behoove you to know what is going on around you—not just in terms of market trends and technology—but in terms of what businesses are opening up, who is going out … Continue reading

Abandoning a “Market”

We talk a lot here in the Home Business Blog about how to identify and attract new markets, understanding our customer base and demographics, and how to grow and expand our businesses–but sometimes, it becomes necessary to make a major switch or change and actually abandon an existing market that we have been working in or courting. Things change. You may find that you are eliminating a specific product or service, or that you have discovered a more lucrative market and do not have the time or resources to continue servicing an existing market. This is not uncommon in a … Continue reading

Keeping Up With Trends

While there is definitely such a thing as being too trendy, it can still be important when operating a home business to try to stay somewhat “in touch” with what is going on and what the latest and greatest trends are—both within your field and in the world at large. Trade magazines and specialty publications are an excellent source of information about current and upcoming trends in various fields of business and interest. It may be worth your while to purchase or subscribe to one or two so you can stay current on what’s going on. Newspapers and related Web … Continue reading

New York Fashion Week—Must-Have Items For Fall

Fur and fashion. Mention those two words in the same sentence around PETA supporters and you can bet the fur will be flying. But, on the runways of New York Fashion Week, fur has turned into (gasp!) a must-have item for fall—good looking fake fur, that is. Leave it to designer Marc Bouwer to send models down the runway in mink minidresses. Fashion magazine editors say fake fur is hot, hot, hot for fall. “If the past two falls have been about jewel-encrusted clothing, this fall will be all about fur-enhanced clothing,” one fashion analyst told reporters. From outerwear to … Continue reading

Pop Music–Is The Tide Turning?

Do you remember when the only songs you’d hear when you turned on the radio were either from boy bands or female “teen singing sensations?” ‘N Sync, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera posted hit after hit and sold millions and millions of albums. Youth reigned supreme and being an older singer (say, about 30) was looked down on given the domination of teens on the pop charts. But today it seems the tide is turning. Look at the pop charts these days and you see an entirely different story. Justin Timberlake has graduated from ‘N Sync to raunchy (pardon me, … Continue reading

Celebrity Fashions—Hot Or Not?

When it comes to celebrity fashion beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, whether you think a star’s look is “hot” or “not” it is likely that said celebrity more than likely dished out a ton of cold hard cash for a look that (they at least think) sizzles. The following items have recently graced the pages of fashion magazines—some merely because Hollywood A- listers were spotted modeling them in public. Far Out Frames Bespectacled individuals know even the most mundane frames can be costly. So how much would you pay for a pair of Alain Mikli glasses, … Continue reading

Fashion Trends—Would You Wear It?

It’s that time of the week again… time for another edition of “Fashion Trends—Would You Wear It?” A blog dedicated to the latest trends modeled by Hollywood’s elite. Recently, I have been adding at least one trend that I would actually shell out money for, though as regular readers of this blog know I am a bit conservative, so super short skirts, belly baring shirts and fingerless fishnet gloves never score well with me (though they may with you). In keeping with tradition here are a few recent fashion trends as made popular by stars and their friends, included is … Continue reading

I Couldn’t Stand Them The First Time Round…

When it comes to fashion it seems celebrities are able to get away with wearing just about anything. Sure they face the threat of ending up on Mr. Blackwell’s or PEOPLE magazine’s “Worst Dressed List,” but for some even that kind of publicity is welcomed. In my opinion, many a Hollywood star could careless what they are photographed wearing, which could be why many are documented wearing some rather, well, how can I put this tactfully… interesting apparel? And, I’m not talking about red carpet fashion statements such as Bjork’s swan dress or Cher’s black-feathered-whatever-that thing-was designed by Bob Mackie, … Continue reading

More Celebrity Fashion Trends– “Would You Wear It?”

Every few weeks I compile a list of clothing items I’ve witnessed stars wearing in various entertainment and fashion magazines. Typically, I would wear about 20% of the items I see, the other 80% I question why anyone would wear. Of course, buying is a lot different than wearing. I will admit I have a habit of seeing a particular outfit, hunting it down in a store and letting it sit in my closet for months. It’s not that it doesn’t fit or that it is unflattering, it’s simply because I don’t have anywhere to wear it. (Ah, the life … Continue reading

Love The Look OR Love To Hate It

In Hollywood new looks come and go faster than figure skater Sasha Cohen spins on ice. The latest makeover victims… I mean trendsetters… to hit the airwaves are Clay Aiken and Scarlett Johansson. Let’s start with Aiken. Not only does he have a new album out, but he also has a new look to boot. Unfortunately for the “American Idol” runner-up it’s his “transformation” that’s garnering more attention than his new CD. While I am not a huge “American Idol” fan, I did watch enough to get used to Aiken’s spiky-hair then–BANG—he premiered a hipper (I guess) shaggy do. Personally, … Continue reading
