Managing Your Time

One of the struggles that I find a lot of people have who work from home is managing their time. When you aren’t under the careful observation of a boss it can be too easy to get stuck in the vicious cycle of time wasters. You know what I mean…checking your email every few minutes, picking up around the house, watching Dr. Phil. Recently I started really paying attention to the things I spend time doing in between my work. I knew I wasn’t managing my time well because there were just too many evenings that I still had to … Continue reading

Appreciate Working from Home

Last week I was reminded of one of the great benefits to working from home. I live in Wisconsin and we got hit with a wallop of a blizzard that went from Tuesday evening until Wednesday. I couldn’t believe what I woke up to Wednesday morning. My van was completely buried, our alley had four feet high snow drifts and the side door to our house was unreachable because it was snowed in. It didn’t take long for my husband to discover he wasn’t going anywhere. He tried to leave for work but our alley prevented him from even getting … Continue reading

Be Professional in Your Home-Based Business

If you want to be taken seriously in your home business it’s important that you maintain a level of professionalism. This can be difficult when you are not working outside the home. It can be easy to grasp onto a casual look and attitude from within the four walls of your home. I made the joke to my husband last Friday that it was going to be casual Friday at my job. I had on my Green Bay Packer’s shirt in celebration of their playoff game victory. But I really did take my casual Friday seriously because the majority of … Continue reading

Getting an Organizational Tune-Up

If last year you found it difficult to locate items, to keep on top of your schedule or to remember appointments then you may be in need of an organizational tune-up. The start of a new year is the perfect time to do this. There are some items that are must-have’s when it comes to a home business. First and foremost you need a calendar. In my case, I prefer to have more than one. I keep a calendar on my phone so that if I am ever out and about and I need to check for a conflict, I … Continue reading

Blessings and Curses

I have found working from home to be both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes the very things that are blessings can also be a curse. Let me explain. This past Monday my son was home sick. He really needed to get into the doctor. It was a blessing that I was able to be home with him and take him to the doctor. The curse was that because I did take him to the doctor and it took away three hours of work time, my day on Tuesday got screwed up. Tuesday I already had plans made to meet … Continue reading

What Will 2011 Bring to Your Home Business?

A few days before the New Year, I take time to sit down and think about goals. I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions but I like the whole idea of setting goals for important areas in my life. Of course, one of those areas is with my career. Having a home business is mostly a blessing but it does have its downsides. I started to think about some of them and how I can either overcome them or learn to readjust. It got me thinking, “What will 2011 bring to my home business?” Well here is the thing, it … Continue reading

Benefits of a Self-Evaluation

One of the things I always dreaded doing when I was in the workforce outside of my home was a self-evaluation. Many employers now require that not only do they give an appraisal of your work but you give one of yourself. My last job outside of the home was as a preschool teacher. I remember being handed a four-page self-evaluation form to fill out and inside, groaning. You find yourself in a real struggle. If you give yourself a higher rating it may sound like you are being prideful. If you give yourself a lower rating it may sound … Continue reading

Work Hours and Marriage

Work life is making it harder for Australian marriage and families. I wonder if it is just as difficult in other countries. The problem seems to be there is not enough flexibility in work hours and arrangements. Despite the introduction of flexi time, job sharing and part time work, statistics show Australian families are not that much better off. Statistics show those with flexible hours in 2006 were sixty percent. In 2009 it was fifty eight percent. Hardly a significant improvement. The lack of choice of days worked has actually increased by one percent. From what I’ve read from time … Continue reading

Starting Your Own Niche Site

Like myself, many single parents tend to work solely from home so we can take care of our kids, perhaps home school them, and try to fill as many roles as possible in our children’s lives. Though there are a hundred scams for every one legitimate WAH business, there are some solid ways to help make ends meet. Freelance writing is one, as well as Internet marketing. These days, most families have access to the internet, which gives you a virtual money-making machine right at your fingertips. All it takes is some time and perseverance, and a healthy dose of … Continue reading

Tips for Craigslist 2

Last time I spoke a little bit about Craigslist and how it is a great resource for buying items for less than the normal retail cost. We did wind up buying a large wooden swingset this past weekend, thanks to Craigslist, and we have purchased several other items in the past this way. We have also sold some items on Craigslist, and it has been pretty worthwhile. Here are more tips for Craigslist, this time will concentrate on using it to get rid of your unwanted items. Put up good inventory and be honest. While it has been my experience … Continue reading
