The Trouble with Statistics

Sometimes statistics can be wrong, or at least misleading. That is, if we compare them to people we know. Can You Die of a Broken Heart?

Can you die of a broken heart? It appears you can. Our local paper ran a story about Vera Guthrie. Vera had been married to Tom for over 65 years. He died six months ago. According to family members she was broken hearted after her beloved husband died. And in fact, she died ‘when her aorta split.’ Contrast this lasting marriage, where she was broken hearted without her long term husband, with one I heard about recently. You often hear meaning people say that some couples are too young to get married. There is a theory and some evidence to suggest that young marriages don’t work. Yet years ago, many people were married much younger than they are today. Once 18 wasn’t considered young to get married. Is there an optimum time to have children? Once, people married young and had children young. These days, many couples choose to delay having children and that can cause its own problems as older mothers are more at risk of children with compilations like Downs Syndrome. The other thing is that often women are more involved with their career and are less likely to want to give it up for family. Defying the Odds

There are always exceptions to any rule. Statistics can give a general pattern of society’s trends but there are always those that defy the odds and do not fit the general pattern. As I read Mary Ann’s article, I was saddened to read the sad state of marriage in America. Sadly, it’s no different in Australia.
