Taking Advantage of Fall’s Cool Weather

With kids headed back to school this week cooler temps are right around the corner. But instead of shedding a tear as summer slips away consider embracing the cool, crisp air and using it to aid your fall workouts.

Autumn is a treat for the senses: There’s a nip in the air, colorful leaves coat trees (or crunching under your shoes), and the smell of fresh apple pies cooling on people’s windowsills fill the air. It’s an ideal time of the year to exercise outdoors. Think about it; you don’t have to worry about the humidity and bugs, and you don’t have to find a sitter for your children as they will be back in school.

If you live near the beach, jog on the sand, play volleyball, throw the Frisbee around, or play a vigorous game of fetch with your dog. Fall is also a great time to exercise on the beach because the summer crowds are gone and you practically have the entire place to yourself.

If you live in the mountains, use the first days of fall to explore cross-country ski trails or snowshoe paths before the first flake flies and the area is packed with people. If you have access to a lake try kayaking or canoeing. Not only will you get an excellent whole-body workout, but also most waterways clear out once the summer ends.

If you are landlocked consider getting in a workout around your house. Rake leaves, apply a fresh coat of paint to your fence or complete other yard work. All of these activities will elevate your heart rate and help you burn calories.

Another option: Think outside the box. Fall means the beginning of new classes at local gyms and colleges. Consider enrolling in a ballroom dance class or learn tai chi. Look for activities that intrigue you and will keep your interest—-tap dancing, fencing, boxing… the opportunities for physical activity are practically limitless.
