Thanksgiving Love Stories: Be Grateful You’re Not Married to Spencer Pratt

If you’re not a fan of The Hills, you may not have any idea who Spencer Pratt or his girlfriend Heidi Montag are.
Er…except it’s not right to say Heidi’s his girlfriend anymore.

After breaking up during last season, they got back together this season. Worse (I say that because I can’t stand Spencer and am in the camp that thinks Heidi’s making a big mistake staying with him), news broke last night that the pair eloped to Mexico just a few days ago and are now married.

None of Heidi’s family was there. Nor were any of her friends. Though that’s not so surprising. She hardly has any anymore thanks to Spencer.

The Great Push

See, he’s purposefully driven anyone away from Heidi that ever meant anything to her. It started when they first started dating and he pushed Heidi’s best friend at the time, Lauren Conrad, out. This season he’s alienated Heidi from her mom and sister.

And I can’t believe Heidi’s let it happen. I thought for sure she’d wake up and see the pattern when Spencer started painting her family as the bad guys –much the same way he did with Lauren.

But Heidi seems oblivious. She gets annoyed when he calls her sister “the Mooch” and her mom “Stalker Mom,” and she wasn’t too happy when Spencer was completely disrespectful and made her mom cry, but none of that was enough to snap her out of the spell he’s got her under.

Inappropriate Laughter

During the episode last night, Heidi came home from what I think was her first day back to work. (She’d gotten fired, but somehow managed to get her job back. Or at least hired back with her old company.)

Spencer asked how it went (which was nice), but then he laughed when she said it was different in a lot of ways, one being she had a tiny cubicle now instead of an office.

I thought, “Man, that’s what I’ll write for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving Love Story. How anyone who’s not married to Spencer Pratt has a lot of blessings right there to be thankful for.”

Why I’m Grateful I’m Not Married to a Spencer Pratt

  1. Spencer’s sister Stephanie defends him as being utterly and completely devoted to Heidi, but I question how healthy that devotion is. So that’s the first thing I’m grateful for: that Wayne’s love doesn’t stifle me or chase away friends and family.
  2. I’m grateful that even though it took Wayne forever to ask me to marry him, he was supportive of whatever wedding option I wanted. Heidi had wanted an actual ceremony, but Spencer has been pushing to elope since pretty much the moment he asked her to marry him. Looks like he got his way.
  3. That both of our families were able to be at our wedding.
  4. That Wayne’s not rude or arrogant.
  5. That he meets me halfway on most things and doesn’t expect everything to always be his way.
  6. That if we have a problem, he’s willing to listen with an open ear and an intent on solving the problem, not just on being sarcastic and avoiding any kind of blame.
