The Crafter / Instrumenting Personality Type

The “Crafter / Instrumenting” Personality type, or the ISTP personality type, describes a person who is an Introvert (I), who perceives the world through Sensing (S), who relies on Thinking (T) to problem solve and make decisions, and who views the world from the vantage point of being open to Perceiving (P) ideas that are brand new to you, and different from your own.

If you are an introvert, it means that you are more comfortable focusing on your own inner thoughts and ideas than you are with interacting with a room full of people, especially if you do not know those people very well. You use your own five senses to help you determine what the facts are in a given situation, and you like to use logic and consistency to help you solve the problems that you face. You view the outside world by identifying ideas that are new and different to your own, and you are open to hearing about and considering those new ideas.

The parenting style of a person with an ISTP personality is one that values personal space and respect. You are absolutely not the kind of parent that would ever be described as “control freak”. You don’t value systems that emphasize authority and control that a person is expected to follow blindly, and without question, and this is reflected in the ways that you choose to do your parenting. You prefer to give your child the space he needs in order to develop as a self-sufficient individual. While you aren’t the kind of parent who has a tendency to enforce a long list of rules, you do have very high expectations that your child will exercise self-discipline. You want to be there for your kids when they need you, whether that is for help with a problem or for basic needs. Overall, your parenting style is designed to encourage your child to become a person who thinks for himself.

A child who has an ISTP parent, as you might expect, learns how to think for himself. This means that he learns the thinking skills that are necessary to in order to form good arguments, and to problem solve. It also means that he develops ideals and values that are intrinsic, and not based on what everyone around him happens to believe. This child dances to the beat of his own drummer. This is a child who will be confident enough to question figures of authority when he feels it necessary or important to do so. The child of an ISTP parent has had plenty of opportunities to explore the world, and to discover who he is. He also has had time to develop good habits of self discipline.

A child who has the ISTP personality will become an adult who gravitates towards a career that allows him to use his own methods of problem solving in order to find a solution to a problem. He will prefer careers that have a tangible goal that can be achieved. This goal should be specifically defined, and be something that can be easily identified. He will seek employment in careers that require employees to be self sufficient, and allows them to work independently. An adult with the ISTP personality type might become a police officer, a pilot, a medical technician, or a paralegal.
