The Exotic Shorthair: The Best of Two Worlds

Exotic Shorthair catIt looks like a Persian cat, but it isn’t, as the fur is decidedly different. What is this adorable creature that almost looks like a teddy bear? The Exotic Shorthair seems to be a Persian cat whose plush coat was somehow stolen. Dating back to the 1960s, this breed occurred when an American Shorthair was crossed with a Persian cat. The result was a creature that retains all of the loving and placid ways of the Persian, but none of the work associated with maintaining that glorious but labor-intensive coat. This breed is sometimes referred to as “the lazy man’s Persian cat.” These cats are bred to meet the Persian standard in every way except for the long coat and make excellent pets.

Over years of breeding, their temperaments have evolved to be almost identical with that associated with their longhaired cousins. They are quiet cats and their voices are seldom heard. Gentle and very laid back, Exotic Shorthairs are extremely affectionate. The king of lap cats, this breed is not overly demanding, but will beg for attention in its own special way. Known to “hug” their owners in response to being petted, these creatures often push their wet noses right into the face of a two-legged admirer. Even though most might think otherwise, male Exotics are in general, more affectionate than their female counterparts. These cats also mature later than most breeds.

Exotics have no trouble getting along with children or other pets. They retain their easy-going nature all throughout their lives. They love the simple pleasures, like watching water drip from a faucet or chasing paper balls all over the house. They are devoted, loyal companions and a joy to know and behold.
