For many people the best way of getting rid of things they no longer want is a garage or yard sale. In the area where we live it is a favorite pastime.
We have friends who regularly go to garage sales in the hope of picking up a bargain. It’s something we have done in the past. Now we can’t be bothered. But many people find them an enjoyable way to spend weekend time and others a useful way to make a bit of money on unwanted goods.
Once when we were moving we held a garage sale. We did get rid of a number of items like fish tanks and equipment, toys, books, microwave cookbooks, and various other things. Often the things you don’t expect to sell do and those you expect to don’t.
The big items like a heavy old wood kitchen dresser we didn’t sell and so ended up calling the Salvation Army to come and collect that, as it was a good solid piece of furniture and nothing wrong with it, except it needed repainting or sanding back and varnishing. We’d had it for years and bought it at an auction and were quite simply sick of it.
If you decide to go with the garage sale idea here are a few tips.
Make sure you have your sale goods ticketed and ready a few days before the arranged sale date.
Advertise in the local paper and by putting up signs. Don’t forget to take the signs down when the sale is over.
Regardless of what time you out for the sale to start there will always be those who try and get in earlier. Often these are second hand dealers looking for bargains they can then sell for more than twice as much in their shop, or people who regularly have stalls at trash and treasure markets looking for goods.
When the house next door to us, had a garage stale advertised as starting at 8am, there was a crowd already by 7am . Some will even call in days before. So be prepared for that.
