The Great Pajama Adventure

Necessity is, indeed, the mother of invention. I know this because I have four very inventive children and I, as their mother, have done a great many things out of necessity to keep them alive and me sane. Take, for instance, what I did last night.

My three-year-old is the most darling little toddler boy you’ll ever meet. I can give you a money-back guarantee on that. He’s also the most mischievous, monkey-like little boy on the planet. (I think God makes the most rascally little boys also the cutest ones – it saves their lives.)

Lately, he’s gotten in the habit of taking off his pajamas before going to sleep. This wasn’t really a problem because he didn’t take off his diaper, but last night the diaper came off and then it was a problem. My husband was the lucky one who got to deal with the resulting . . . um . . . complications, while I tried my hardest to find a pin. See, when you put the baby in a sleeper, you can then put a pin (I prefer diaper pins, personally – they don’t come open as easily) through their pajamas and through the hole in the zipper pull, thereby trapping the child in their pajamas. You’re wondering how I know this? Well, let’s say his older brother was a poop painter and leave it at that.

Back to the matter at hand. The child was cleaned up and the sleeper was reinstated. I had no pin. The brain began to whirl. How to keep the pajamas on the child so he couldn’t remove his diaper again. . .

I took a needle and thread and sewed him into his pajamas.

It’s not as drastic as it sounds – I just made a few stitches up at the top, looped the thread through the zipper pull, and then made a few more stitches at the same time. It is a little bit odd to have to snip your child out of his clothing in the morning, but I’d sure rather do that than deal with the resulting . . . consequences.

Isn’t motherhood fun sometimes?
