The Importance of Lists

check list People who make lists are often the butt of a few jokes. They can be seen as uptight and over organized. When it comes to taking care of a home, though, list making can be an important tool in keeping track of everything and even giving you the motivation to get more done in a day.

Different Types of Lists

There are a number of different types of lists that can help you keep your home and your life organized. There are inventory lists, grocery lists, to do lists, accomplishment lists, dream lists, activity lists, information lists and more. Different lists serve different purposes, from keeping your life on schedule to helping you be prepared.

Along with the different types of lists, there are the different ways to make and keep your lists. There is the traditional pencil and paper, of course, but also many different digital options, from keeping a list on your computer in a word processing or spreadsheet program to using a mobile app.

The Reasons for Lists

While many reasons for lists have already been mentioned above I think it is important to call out some of the most important reasons for lists in your home and your life. The act of writing things down (or typing them) gives things more significance, more importance. Studies have shown that when we humans make a list, it stimulates a part of the brain that is responsible for filtering and processing. Your brain literally thinks that what you write down is important, so therefore it tends to get done! Pretty cool, huh?

Writing something down in a list also helps you to figure out what is really important to you. By having those important things, let us say goals, there in black and white, you can become more focused on them. Through list making, you may even be able to figure out the answers to questions that you have been pondering.

At the very least, making a list will help you remember tasks or important information that you don’t want to forget.
