The Importance of Taking Care of Your Home

In my last blog I asked if you were overscheduled. This is important to know because it can affect so many areas of your life, including the keeping of your home.

If you have determined that indeed you are overscheduled, then its time to learn what you can do about it. I think the first thing is to really grasp the importance of maintaining a clean, orderly home.

Too many people think it’s the last thing you should be concerned with. In fact, I have heard some try to sound like the best mom in the world by making comments such as, “I don’t worry about my house. It’s more important that I spend time with my children.”

Now no one would ever argue with that. Yes, it is more important to spend time with your children. But it’s also important to teach your children life skills and like it or not, taking care of a home is one of them.

We tend to only think of our character as a way we are influencing our children. But they observe everything about our lives and they notice what we devote our time to and what we care about.

They know if we truly care about the upkeep of our homes. If they can never find the remote because the living room is so cluttered or they can’t rely on you producing a clean pair of underwear, believe me…you probably won’t win the “Mother of the Year” award.

If there is one area that I slack in it’s with meals. I do a terrible job at planning for them, cutting out coupons and even cooking them. Sometimes I can have it so together that I actually have a meal plan for the week and I have the ingredients in my fridge…but the night I am supposed to make pork chops, mashed potatoes and corn, I instead throw in a pizza.

I have heard many complaints from my children about this. They are watching and they are observant. And if you don’t want your child to grow up to become a slob, then we have to make sure it’s not the example we are setting.

So hopefully you have come to understand the true importance of taking care of your home. This will help in prioritizing your time and learning how to not be overscheduled, which we will continue to delve into in the next blog.
