The Joy of Busy Work

Most of the time, I want to be challenged in my work. That is one of the reasons I even started a home business in the first place—I got tired of having other people dictate my work day and set my schedule and even tell me how they thought things should be done. I wanted to feel challenged and limited only by my own choices and issues. That said, there are those days or mornings when I really do enjoy a bit of busy work. The rote activity of preparing mailings or putting together copies and packets gives me a certain amount of relaxed pleasure. I wouldn’t want to have to do it every day—but I do like a little busy work now and again…

The great thing for me about busy work is that not only do I get a great deal of non-thinking work accomplished, but I tend to also do a bunch of thinking while I’m at it. This is often when I come up with some great brainstorms, solve problems that have been plaguing my business, or otherwise activate my brain to see things from different perspectives. There is something about the easy repetition and the fact that my brain is not challenged by the busy work action—that frees it up to focus on and solve other problems.

Since operating my own home business, I have come to appreciate and look forward to my busy work projects which tend to be few and far between anymore. I turn on a little music, clear a space for the work, and a good 2 or 3 hours later, I’ve accomplished the task and had a reasonably relaxing morning or afternoon at my work—all while thinking and solving other problems at the same time. What could be better than that?
