The Sunday Evening Review: Dec. 3

Welcome to this week’s review of our blogs. It’s the beginning of December, the beginning of the shopping season, and beginning of a new era here at the Homeschool Blog at Families.com!! That’s right, we’re welcoming a brand new blogger here. You can read her introduction in, New Homeschool Blogger Introduction. I personally am very excited to have a homeschool blogging “buddy” and I am greatly looking forward to all that she has to offer. Look for more of her blogs coming out soon!

This week’s state was New Jersey. I must say if you live in New Jersey you are very lucky. Not only do they not have standardized tests, or any kind of progress reports to turn in–they in fact have NO paperwork whatsoever to turn in. If you’re not sure why I’m so astounded, look soon for a blog on New York’s regulations! If nothing else it will make you grateful to live where you live.

Do you know what your homeschooler should know? We are currently working on a compiled list of a typical course of study. This week we discussed What Your Second Grader Should Know in Math and Science. This lists are linked and have resources and so I would encourage you to take a look. It is of course, a guideline and I personally believe that parents are in the best position to decide what is best for their child to learn. But if you’re looking for a guideline or a ‘spring board’ if you will, from which to jump–check out the series.

Moving on we picked up some interesting discussion this week with regards to the Cost of Homeschooling. Cost varies widely from family to family depending on the age and number of kids in the family as well as type of curriculum that is used. I was surprised to find that many people have similar costs.

Many of us have heard the argument that our poor homeschooled kids may not get to go to prom. But this week I wrote on a homeschool group who held their own prom. Whole families attended and dancing was formal ballroom style. A little part of me must admit that I would love to attend a ‘family prom’. It sure sounded like a lot of fun!

Completing our week of blogs, is our Homeschooling Advent Calendar. Each day, I am dedicating one blog to write about Christmas themed activities. We started with a list of Holiday Books to Treasure. Next, I encouraged you to get out those pencils and notebooks and start writing! Check out the writing ideas in ‘Tis the Season for Writing.
