The Value of Conversations

Something struck me yesterday while doing a spell check after writing an article. I’d meant to write ‘conversation’ but because I’m the world worst typist – dyslexic fingers, it came out not even close. As a result spell check suggested I meant ‘conversion.’ But that error actually made me think. How often do conversions of family or friends or neighbors come about because of conversations?

Statistics in Australia show the majority of people are invited to church or church activities by a friend. It also shows that most people come to know Jesus and commit their lives to Him, which is what conversion is, through a friend or family member.

At a writing group which I go to a sign on the inside of the church above the door out, building says,’You are entering your mission field.’ In other words, we don’t need to go overseas to be a missionary. There are plenty of opportunities among your friends, family, neighbors, workmates etc.

The other day I went to the coffee shops after church to buy a cup of coffee. The young chap there often asks ‘Have you had a good morning’ and I might say what I’ve been doing. So Sunday morning I was all primed to say, ‘Yes, I’ve been to church.’ And then hopefully let the conversation develop from there. Sadly the young chap wasn’t there so the conversation never took place but you can be sure I’ll keep it in mind for another Sunday.

Sometimes witnessing to others is simply about praying for opportunities to tell others and creating those opportunities. Next time someone asks you what you did on the weekend, how about telling them you went to church. They might just surprise you by making a comment you can follow up on. Mick and I had just such a conversation with an acquaintance and we were able to explain what we believe and why.

Sometimes it’s all about dropping little seeds into conversation. It might take several times of dropping the seed and people watching how you live you life, before they respond and ask you about your faith. Then you have a great opportunity to tell them what you believe and why or invite them along to church or an event where they will hear the gospel message.
