Things Happening at SCGS Jamboree – Pre-Event Day

taking notes The Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree takes place once a year. This year is the forty-third annual SCGS Jamboree. It will take place June 8, June 9, and June 10 of 2012. There will be a pre-event day happening on June 7, 2012. Here is what will be happening on the pre-event day.

The SCGS Jamboree will not happen until June. However, they are offering an “Early Bird Discount” to anyone who registers to attend the Jamboree before April 23, 2012. In order to help you decide if this genealogy event is something you would like to attend, I will give you some information on some of the things going on at this year’s Jamboree.

The SCGS has put together a schedule of events, classes, and other activities for each day of the Jamboree, including the pre-event day. Things may change somewhat between now, and when the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree will begin in June of 2012. The schedule can give you a fairly good idea of what to expect. Just be prepared for potential changes to it.

One thing is for certain. The Family History Writers Conference will be taking place on the pre-event day of this year’s SCGS Jamboree. Here are just a couple of the events that will be taking place.

One of the first things taking place on Thursday, June 7, 2012, is a presentation by Lisa Louise Cooke and author Steve Luxenberg. He wrote a book called “Annie’s Ghosts”. It is about how he used his genealogical skills to learn about a secret sister that his mother never talked about. I have read his book, and found it to be fascinating.

Another interesting presentation will be done by Lisa A. Alzo, MFA. It is called “Family History Writing Made Easier: Cloud-based Tools Every Genealogist Can Use”. Genealogists can learn about the latest tech tools and writing apps that can make bringing your family’s story to life much easier. You can access some of these tools through your netbook, iPad, or smartphone.

Steve Luxenberg will be presenting “Reality’s Rough Edges: On Writing Memoir”. It asks many thought provoking questions that family history writers need to grapple with. How much should a writer trust his own memories? How hard should a writer try to verify a memory? What are some of the options for the writer who can’t ever know or remember key details?

You will also find presentations on publishing, on how to turn your genealogy research into a story, and more. These are just a few of the things happening at the 2012 SCGS Jamboree that I found interesting. For more details, check over the full schedule for the pre-event day.
