Toilet Paper Sticker Shock

The other day I ran into Target to pick up some toilet paper. My forays into buying toilet paper are few and far between because I usually buy it in bulk, either at a warehouse store or at the grocery store. After all, toilet paper is something that we will need in steady supply, so I figure I might as well pick up a bunch of it at a time. Plus, I try to match coupons and sales so I can get the best prices.

Because of changes in our budget and some life events, we don’t have much of a stockpile anymore. This means that when we need toilet paper, I have to buy it then and there or there will be plenty of unhappy campers in my house.

But before I start running up and down our upstairs hallway shouting, “Spare a square! Spare a square,” I may have to find some other savings strategies.

Now I know that many extreme couponers swear that they never pay for toilet paper, ever. They do all of the drugstore deals to get it for free. That is great, and I think I may have to extend my coupon clipping to include some of these stores, because I experienced serious stick shock when the cashier told me that my total was almost eight dollars for the large package of the generic UP brand.

“Make sure it isn’t the scratchy, flimsy stuff,” my husband said before he saw the price. “Okay, well maybe a little scratchy is okay.”

The last time I did pay attention to toilet paper prices, I got the name brand in that same size for half of the cost. Are groceries really going up that much? They must be. I mean I knew this, but when something as sacred as toilet paper is affected, well, it really makes me stand up, um I mean, sit down and take notice.
“We have those leaves growing up next to the house,” I say to my husband. “Maybe you can train them to climb up to the bathroom window?”

“Very funny,” he says.

No one is interested in using leaves. My family has made it clear that sometimes my frugal ways can be taken a little too far.
