Tools of the Trade

Each of us has certain items that we rely on day in and day out to keep our home based businesses going. The collection of items that you depend on to help you get the job done will vary depending upon what you do for work. Today, I realized that some of the items that I depend on do not exactly fit the traditional description of essential office equipment.

There are plenty of things that I use that are things that one would expect to find in a writer’s workplace or a law office. My laptop and cell phone are two things that come to mind. There are other things, though, that have become essential office equipment for me as I have combined working from home with being a stay at home mom to first one little boy and now two.

For example, when my second son was born a couple of weeks ago, my nursing pillow came back into the office. My newborn does not always nap at the same exact time as my toddler, so when it’s nap time for big brother, little brother hangs out in my lap while I work. The same goes for my baby sling. I wear my newborn most of the day so that I can play with my toddler and get chores done, preserving the time when the boys are sleeping for my work. Another “tool” that I use in combination with the baby sling is our yard. When I must make a phone call while one or both of the boys are awake, we go outside all together. My toddler loves to play outside and “forgets” to implement his usual shenanigans like he does when I try to make a call while we are indoors.

Do you have any interesting office essentials that help you get the job done?
