Trash Day

Its trash day and I missed it, again. Fortunately with just Hailey and I we don’t make a lot of trash but occasionally the cans do need to make it to the curb. If I don’t remember to put them out at night I always forget in the morning. Well, I don’t really forget but I’m always running when I leave the house in the morning so there just isn’t time to stop and put the trash out.

Next week I’ll remember. I have a sort of routine that I try to follow the night before trash day, when I remember. I go through the house and collect all the trash cans, with three bathrooms and four bedrooms there are quite a lot of trash cans! Since we recycle I try to go through those trash cans and pull out the recycling so it can be thrown in the recycling bin.

I don’t know about your house but at my house the trash cans quickly become a mess. I’m not sure why it is physically impossible for a teenager to change the trash bag instead of trying to shove more in, but it is. As a result the bags get pushed down and the trash cans get dirty. Even the bedroom ones since Hailey drinks pop and will throw the cans in the trash, it seems like there is always just enough pop left in the can to make a sticky mess.

In the spring and summer I take all the cans outside and hose them out with the garden hose. When it gets colder I have to clean them inside. I have a small phobia about germs so to keep my trash cans clean I like to use boiling water.

While the water is boiling I splash a little vinegar and baking soda in each can. Once the water is boiling I pour it into the least dirty can, swish it around with a toilet brush that I bought just for this purpose, and then I dump it into the next dirtiest can. I continue until I reach the kitchen can, which in our house, is always the dirtiest. Then I scrub the kitchen can with the brush and dump everything into the hall bath toilet, then I grab the toilet brush from that room and clean the toilet while I’m there. Multi tasking at its best.

When I’m done the trash cans are clean and sweet smelling, for another week at least!
