Winter Safety Tips

Winter weather can be very serious. Several parts of the United States regularly experience freezing temperatures and large amounts of snow every winter. This kind of weather may look pretty in photos, but it can be dangerous to have to live in and deal with. Here are some winter safety tips that can help keep you, and your family, safe this winter. Snow Removal Safety The National Safety Council (NSC) has some safety tips regarding snow removal. They advise that people who are over the age of 40, and who are relatively inactive, should be especially careful when shoveling snow. … Continue reading

Theme Park Travel Tips

My best friend’s family will be traveling from their home in Hawaii to Southern California the day after Christmas. They decided to do away with exchanging Christmas gifts, and instead are using the money they would have spent on presents to take a family trip to Disneyland, SeaWorld, and Legoland. It’s going to be quite a vacation. But, the truth is, I’m not really all that jealous. While I would love to escape the bone-chilling temps this winter I also know southern California (and Florida) can be a stressful destination during the last week of December and first week of … Continue reading

Turkey Time Travel

Welcome to November. It’s the first day of the second to the last month of the year. Thanksgiving is exactly three weeks away. And you know what that means… let the travel nightmares begin. Thanksgiving is undeniably one of the busiest travel times of the year. However, not everyone is loading up the family to go over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house for a lavish turkey spread. Some folks use the extended holiday weekend to go skiing, while others take their family reunions on the road and let hotel chefs whip up their Thanksgiving meal. If … Continue reading

So without further ado, here are my picks for the ten best wedding planning articles of 2006. … Continue reading

Deer Hunter’s Widows Travel Deals

When I first moved to Wisconsin more than a decade ago I had no idea what a major impact deer-hunting season had on the state’s economy. Frankly, aside from the obvious self-explanatory definition, I had no idea what the heck deer-hunting season was all about. Boy, was I in for a shocker when the season rolled around and as a rookie television reporter I was sent out to cover story, after story, after story on every conceivable deer hunting angle that existed. It was only then that I learned what a “deer hunter’s widow” was. Similar to a “golf widow” … Continue reading

Tips For Avoiding Deer–Part One

In an effort to get to the post office as quickly as possible on Saturday (they close early on Saturdays) I decided to travel via the interstate rather than my normal route through town. In doing so I passed the remains of three dead deer on a five-mile stretch of highway. “UGH!” I thought. “It’s that time of year again.” And so it is. The period (at least in our state) weeks prior to the opening of gun deer season when displaced deer flee from their natural habitats and plague drivers with the fear that a collision is imminent. (Did … Continue reading

Family Travel—Kid-Friendly Restaurants

If you’re hitting the road this summer you’ll likely be making frequent pit stops at fast-food favorites (if not for the food, at least for the restrooms). However, if you’re like me, you get to the point where just looking up at another hanging fluorescent menu can make your stomach turn. Thank goodness for sit-down family restaurants. Most are kid-friendly, clean and affordable. (My criteria for an acceptable pit stop.) There are some regional and national restaurant chains that are better than others when it comes to catering to families with young children. Here’s a breakdown of some of my … Continue reading

Help for Families in the “Diaper Gap”

Families with newborns quickly learn that diapers are expensive. Many families struggle to be able to afford enough diapers for their babies. This leads to difficult choices like whether to spend money on food, diapers, or utility bills. The Obama administration has a plan that utilizes technology to help solve this problem. Nearly one in three Americans cannot afford to purchase enough diapers for their babies. In some cases, parents cope by stretching the length of time between diaper changes. This can lead to serious health problems for babies and parents. Babies can end up with urinary tract or staph … Continue reading
