Last Friday Mick took me to the movies. We saw ‘Nights in Rodanthe.’ I’m a big fan of Nicholas Sparks and read the book some time back, so as soon as I saw the movie on I wanted to go.
Mick had been through two previous films from books by Nicholas Sparks. ‘The Notebook’ was the first which he thought was a beautiful though sad story and well acted. If you haven’t seen it, it is the story of a couple’s over and how when she has Alzheimer’s he keeps reminding her of their love their story.
Though he enjojed it, Mick wouldn’t watch ‘The Notebook’ again as I would. But he bought the DVD for me and I watched it again recently and cry every time. It’s on my list of favorite romance movies.
The other film was ‘A Walk to Remember’ which was almost enough to turn Mick off ever wanting tot see another adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks book and on that one I have to agree. But then I’ve always thought that the least satisfactory Nicholas Sparks novel. The characters and particularly the main character never came across as real, even though apparently she is based on a real person. So it was an act of love for Mick to take me to see Nights in Rodanthe.
He thought it was great and was totally involved in the story as I was. Of course he ended up with a teary wife towards the end. (Note:if you haven’t seen it, take the tissues)
Sadly I heard another woman apologizing to her friend about for the movie. She’d obviously expected a romantic comedy. Nicholas Sparks knows how to tell a love story, in my opinion, and how to engage the emotions.
On Sunday we saw another love story. Children dressed as Mary and Joseph along with the most original donkey you’ve ever seen, acted out the Christmas story to one of the carols as it was sung before this elderly gentleman got up to read the Bible. As he tried to read the passage from Isaiah 60:1-3, it became obvious he was trying to keep his emotions under check.
Without a word his wife stood up, walked to the front, linked her arm through his and then gave it a little squeeze as she stood there with him. She continued to hold on to him, showing her support while he read the passage. It was just a beautiful yet simple example of a wife knowing how her husband was feeling and offering the support he needed. I felt privileged to witness it. It’s often those little acts that make up a real live love story.
