Types of Yoga Bolsters

Yoga bolsters offer several benefits for your yoga practice. Bolsters can be used to help you achieve correct alignment in the poses and they can be used anywhere that additional support is needed. People use bolsters under the knees, back and to support them in relaxation poses.

Yoga bolsters are small enough to carry to your yoga studio and fit easily in a closet in between your practice. Bolsters are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and fabrics, so it is pretty easy to find something that will meet your needs and fit your budget.

The most commonly used bolsters are available in cylinder and rectangular shapes in several sizes. The right bolster for you depends on a few different factors. The first step is to consider how you will use the bolster and that will help you determine which type is best for you.

Although the sizes can vary, bolsters in the cylinder shape are usually bigger, firmer and heavier than the rectangular shaped. The size of the bolster and type and weight of the filling that is used in the bolster will affect the weight. Generally, the cylinder shape holds more filling, which also contributes to the added weight and firmness.

If you prefer a softer and lighter weight bolster, you may prefer the rectangular shape. While a firm cylinder may be better to help you achieve alignment and open the body, a softer rectangular shape may be better for use as support in relaxation poses. Personal preference plays the biggest role in which shape will work best for the individual student.

You can often find good deals online for bolsters. If your yoga studio or a friend has bolsters, you can try a rectangular and cylinder shaped bolster before you buy. This will allow you to get a feel for what are available and then you can order your bolster online and save money.
