Using Amazon to Your Best Advantage

I love Amazon. I love browsing the site, reading the book descriptions, buying the books . . . sigh. It’s just a good thing all the way around.

Are you familiar with the Amazon site? Are you getting all you can out of it?

When you first open the page, you’ll see a list of departments down the left-hand side. You can buy tools, electronics, jewelry, and more, but for now, we’re just going to talk about the books.

When you click on books, you’ll be given the choice of books, textbooks, magazines and newspapers, and Amazon shorts. Courtney did a great job telling us about the shorts a little while back. Go ahead and click on books. You can browse subjects, new releases, bestsellers, the New York Times bestsellers, books in Spanish, and bargain books. Or, if you know the title or the author you’re looking for, go ahead and put the name into the search.

Once you’ve clicked on a book title, you’ll see the book cover and price, and you’ll see a link to buy it. You’ll also see a link to view the used copies of the book that have been posted by people like you and me, who have the book and would like to resell it. Depending on the book, you can buy a used copy in good condition for as little as a penny. Regardless of the price, you will save over the full suggested retail.

You’ll also see a link marked “sell yours here.” Perhaps you have a copy you’d like to resell. It’s easy to sign up to sell books on Amazon. Just click on the link and follow the easy directions.

What if you’re interested in the book but don’t want to buy it right now? Click on “add to wish list.” This will save the book information for you so that when you’re ready to make the purchase, you don’t have to hunt it down again. You simply click on “wish list” and there it is.

You can also set up a gift registry. If you have an upcoming birthday or if you would like to share ideas for Christmas giving, go ahead and add titles to the registry. Your family and friends can come in, access your list, and know what you’d like to receive. In my case, I think the entire Amazon catalog would be on my list!

Would you like to read what others thought about the book you’re investigating? Scroll further down the page. You’ll see reviews from Publishers Weekly as well as other noted sources, and you’ll also view feedback from customers just like you who read the book and want to share their opinions.

Amazon is the online store for book buying. Spend some time on the site, familiarize yourself with all the supplemental links, and have a great time book shopping!
