Vacationing Away From the Kids

I have a bit of a different entry for today’s blog.

For the last few days I’ve been in Mexico with my husband celebrating our twentieth anniversary. One of our nieces and her friend flew out to watch the boys for us. Our boys don’t get to see their east coast relatives very often so I was nervous about the whole thing.

I left some suggestions for fun things to do while we were gone. I brought out the Whoonu game so they could all get to know each other better. Our niece was so impressed with the game that she plans to buy it to play with her friends.

I also suggested that they play some Wii games. The boys had a great time showing off the Wii system and showing the girls how to use the controls for boxing, tennis, and baseball. They loved having new people to challenge.

My niece and her friend took the boys shopping on Friday afternoon after school. I’d left money so they could all pick out a treat. The boys loved getting to pick out soda, chips, and cheetos. They had a “junk food party” and a Harry Potter movie marathon. My niece also brought fun puzzles, yo-yos and science experiments for the boys to try.

For the hours during school I left directions for fun places to explore and shop. I had a lot of fun sharing my town with my niece and her friend, and I really enjoyed hearing all about their adventures while we were gone.

We missed the boys, but we had a great vacation. Getting waited on was a great change from our daily lives. And I think visiting with their college age cousin was a great change for the boys. Parents don’t always have time to play, or the energy to stay up late for a movie marathon. I’m so glad the boys had fun with their cousin and got to know her better.

Being away for four days is not my usual idea of family fun, but I know the trip and change was good for us all.
