Valentine’s Day: Show Your Love with Dark Chocolate

I have been saying it for years. I knew chocolate had to be good for people. I didn’t only say it because chocolate happens to be my favorite treat of all time, although that may have played some small role, but I actually believed that chocolate made me feel better. I have been teased for this theory, but now I have validation.

I’m not talking about the short-lived “high” many people get from the sugar and caffeine either. I always believed that eating small amounts of chocolate on a regular basis helped me feel better. My favorite is dark chocolate, and what do you know… dark chocolate is now said to be healthy (*when eaten in moderation of course).

Antioxidant SealHershey’s now states that its Special Dark Chocolate has the same types of antioxidants found in green tea, black tea, blueberries, and many other healthy foods. A recent Hershey’s ad proclaims that the antioxidants in just one serving of its Special Dark Chocolate outweigh the amount contained in two cups of green tea (see back cover of Woman’s Day, March 2007).

Antioxidants are known to be important for good health as they fight free radicals (believed to cause cancer), help repair tissue damage, and help strengthen the immune system, just to name a few things. Recent studies also suggest that cocoa, found in high concentrations in dark chocolate, may be good for the cardiovascular system.

Isn’t this great news? It is for chocolate lovers!

Hershey's Special Dark ChocolateSo, with these sweet facts in hand, what other treat would you rather give your honey (or yourself)? You can feel free to spoil him or her as well as yourself with delicious dark chocolate for Valentine’s Day and throughout the year. I know what I’m giving my husband for Valentine’s Day.

If you like Hershey’s, Special Dark is available in mini, regular, and large bars, and my personal favorite is Truffles. Look for special packaging for various holidays.

Is all this talk about chocolate giving anybody else the urge to indulge? I think I’ll go see if we have any Truffles left…
