Virginia Genealogy Resources

Virginia Welcomes YouThe state of Virginia has the nickname of the “Old Dominion State”. It is also called the “Mother State” because it was the first to be colonized. Are you searching for more information about your ancestors who once lived in Virginia? Try using some of the Virginia genealogy resources that are linked to in this blog. The answers could be somewhere within them!

Cyndi’s List is, quite possibly, the most comprehensive collections of links to online genealogy resources. If it exists on the internet, then Cyndi’s List probably has a link to it! They have a page called “United States – Virginia”. Choose one of their many collections to start with. Some collections include: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and more!

FamilySearch has a Wiki page about the state of Virginia. You can click on a link for each and every county in the state and it will take you to another FamilySearch Wiki page about that county. You can also find links to information about the major repositories of records in Virginia. Near the bottom of the page, you can find links to Wiki pages about the Colonial Parishes.

Facebook has a Community Page for Virginia Genealogy.org. This is a good resource for genealogists who want to connect with other genealogists who are also working on Virginia genealogy right now. You can also find links to Virginia historical records, and more, from Virginia Genealogy.org. Posts related to Virginia genealogy are welcome.

Interment.net has a search engine at the top of its website. Put the first name, and last name, of your ancestor into it. Or, you can start by selecting a link to one of the counties, or independent cities, in the state of Virginia. If there is a link, it means that Interment.net has information about the records from cemeteries in that location. At a glance, about half of the counties have links to them.

Ancestry.com has a page that is filled with links to all of their Virginia genealogy collections. To access the majority of them, you will need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Some are offered for free, from time to time. Return to their page often. They do a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently being offered for free access.
