This can lead to unhealthy choices that will harm their bodies and sabotage weight loss efforts. Here are some basic tips to losing weight safely. Eat Breakfast: Skipping meals is the fastest way to sabotage your weight loss goals. Normal Body Weight Can Hide Eating Disorders

A study led by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California-San Francisco found that teens and young adults with atypical anorexia can have normal body weights and still be dangerously ill. The research is the largest, most comprehensive assessment to date of normal-weight adolescents with atypical anorexia. Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by weight loss (or lack of appropriate weight gain in growing children); difficulties maintaining an appropriate body weight for height, age, and stature; and, in many individuals, disordered body image. People with anorexia generally restrict the number of calories and … Continue reading

Some Teens are Having Bariatric Surgery

Teenagers who are obese might have the option of having bariatric surgery. Previously, this type of weight loss surgery was only offered to adults. Although it isn’t the best choice for every teenager, there are some teens who can greatly benefit from it. The New York Times reported in February of 2017 that the number of adolescents who are overweight or obese has leveled off in recent years. But the number who are severely obese – heavy enough to qualify for bariatric surgery – has nearly doubled from 1999 to 2014. Previously, 5.2 percent of adolescents were severely obese. That … Continue reading

Teen Weight Loss Surgery and Insurance Coverage

Weight loss surgery might be an option for adults who are morbidly obese. What about for teenagers? Most private health insurance companies will not cover this type of procedure. Teenagers who are covered by Medicaid or CHIP have a better chance of having their weight loss surgery covered. Every surgery, no matter how big or small, comes with risk. While certain kinds of weight loss surgeries may be a recommended option for some adults who are morbidly obese, this doesn’t mean that it is completely and entirely safe in all cases. Not every private health insurance plan will cover this … Continue reading

Signs of Eating Disorders in Teens

Teenage girls are prone to having a poor body image. Bombarded with images of skinny girls on magazines, on stage, on the runway and drooled over by their male counterparts, girls can develop a warped sense of their body. If they head down a road of low self esteem the drive to be accepted and well liked may manifest in an eating disorder. Eating disorders can be an underlying symptom of a greater psychological problem or mental trauma. What signs should be red flags to parents and loved ones? Keep in mind that a teen showing one or two signs … Continue reading

Teens and Body Image Issues

Pimples can make facing the world difficult at best. Some teens opt out of many events and opportunities to spare themselves the stress. Other teens have their growth spurts early and tower over all of their friends. This makes them self conscious. A teenager is told they are overweight, when they are in fact fit and a little muscular. They begin to diet anyway. Eating disorders appear in many different incarnations. In one case, a teen chews her food and then spits it out before swallowing. As a parent watching teenagers deal with these and other similar issues, it is … Continue reading

9 out of 10 Teens Not Eating Their Vegetables

A new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave teens failing grades when it comes to eating their fruits and vegetables. Only ONE teen out of ten in the United States is getting their recommended daily amount of fruits and veggies. Looks like a lot of kids are going to have to stay after class… for a healthy snack. The news is bad: Only 13% of high school students eat three servings of vegetables daily. Only 32% of high school students eat two servings of fruit daily. Less than one out of every ten kids eat … Continue reading

Encouraging Your Teens to Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day… so the saying goes. But try telling that to your family! My younger brother used to hit the snooze on his alarm clock until the last possible second, then throw on some close and rush off to high school without eating. There are lots of “good” reasons for skipping breakfast: I wanted to sleep in. There’s nothing good to eat. It takes too long to make something. I’m not hungry when I first wake up. I want to lose weight. But research has shown that eating breakfast can help boost concentration … Continue reading

Taming Teens as a Single Parent

If you think it was tough when you were the single parent of a small child as they work their way on up to the adolescent stage, hang on. You have no idea how difficult the teen years can be. Though trying at times, to say the least, raising a teen does have a silver lining. You just have to have patience and watch for its arrival. During the teen years more than ever your child is looking for that other parent. If the other parent is in the picture by all means, use them and let them know how … Continue reading

10 Weight Loss Tips for Harried Homemakers

The American Obesity Association has recently released a top 10 weight loss tips for teens that I felt could be easily adapted for adults, especially those of us who are stay-at-home moms. Here they are: 1. Plan some type of activity every day. Plan a walk or bike ride with your kids and hold yourself to it. If your kids are very young, bundle them up in a stroller or consider getting a trailer for your bike so they can ride in comfort (while adding a little extra resistance to your ride). 2. If you like to take your kids … Continue reading
