One of the huge problem areas is the rise of sexual assault on girls by young males. This is largely due to the influence of pornography. Statistics show 70 percent of boys has viewed pornography by age 12 and 100 percent of boys under 15. Much of it is coming over the internet. One of our members here recently found her 7 year old viewing pornography online.
To me then it is obvious that one of the first things parents need to do is set up protection filters on computers so it is less accessible. If all of us parents and grandparents took a responsible attitude that would solve part of the problem.
Keep an eye on what your kids are doing online. With many children having their own laptops or computers it is not as easy as it was when ours we young and we had one computer between the family and it was in a room used by all. Maybe computers should be used in common areas then not bedrooms locked away from others?
Get information and latest updates from www.collectiveshout.org and find out how you can add your voice to others and how you can make a difference. On the site you will also see some of the victories won as products have been removed. You will find out which companies are producing inappropriate, explicit and offensive material aimed at sexualizing young girls and trying to make them grow up too fast. Then you might decide to boycott those companies involved in producing such material and write to them and let them know exactly why you are boycotting them. Write to your local member of parliament about advertising standards.
We need to be outraged at what is happening and keep that outrage fueled so we do not just sit back and do nothing. As it was quoted the other day, though I don’t remember where the quote came from. ‘Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other day. We are the ones we have been waiting for.’
