What is Sports Insurance?

football field Sports insurance is not just for professional athletes. It is a type of insurance policy that can be taken out by individuals who participate in amateur sporting events, by parents of children who play on sports teams, or by places such as park districts, who offer sports activities. It is also available for people who are intending on engaging in sports related activities on a vacation or honeymoon.

It is important to stay healthy, and one of the ways to stay healthy is by leading an active lifestyle. Playing on a sports team can be fun, and is a good way to get exercise. Unfortunately, these types of activities come with their own risks. This is where sports insurance can be helpful.

Sports Insurance policies differ depending on who is taking out the policy. A park district, for example, offers a variety of sports teams that children, teens, and sometimes adults, can join. Their sports insurance should cover accident insurance, in case a player, or a volunteer who is helping coach a team or rule on a game, is injured. The insurance will cover the cost of their medical care for that injury. They also need general liability insurance as part of their sports insurance. This protects the park district in case a spectator or player is injured, and decides to sue the park district for negligence. It covers the court costs that would be involved. The park district also needs to have something called Directors & Officers Liability. This protects the park district in cases where an employee decides to sue for wrongful termination, discrimination, or wrongful suspension.

An individual who is playing on an amateur team does not need the same coverage as the park district, or other organization, would need. Players, both adult and youth, need a sports insurance policy to include accident coverage. This way, if the individual gets injured while playing a sport, the cost of medical care is covered by the insurance policy. Or, if the individual causes injury to another player, it covers the cost of medical care that the other player would need. Before you get a sports insurance policy it would be wise to find out what your team, or organization, is already covering.

Sports insurance is also useful to people who are participating in a sport on a weekend or vacation. Again, the insurance covers the cost of medical care in the case of an injury to yourself, or to someone else. If you are using expensive equipment in order to participate in a sport, you may want to make sure that your sports insurance policy covers the cost of replacing the equipment in case of damage, loss, or theft.
