What Parents Put Up With

And the Miley song was on

And the Miley song was on

And the Miley song was on… and on… and on… and on…

And I thought the freakin’ fish song was bad.

I stand corrected.

Listening to Miley Cyrus’ hit song “Party In The U.S.A.” for the 10 billionth time is like getting hit in the head with a sledgehammer by manic railroad worker with good aim.

The problem is my 5-year-old LOVES it.

Which opens up an entirely different can of worms.

For starters I’ve gone to great lengths to shield my baby from pop culture influences, including… nay, specifically, Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, Bratz dolls, the new primped and pimped Dora and a slew of other non-Snoopy/Backyardigans/Little Bear paraphernalia.

Unfortunately, I’m not always successful.

A few weeks ago when my daughter and I were stuck at a train crossing I turned on the car radio. Lo and behold Christmas tunes were playing. Given that it wasn’t even Halloween yet, I pressed the scan button and it stopped on a pop rock station. Soon our vehicle was flooded with:

“I put my hands up
They’re playing my song,
And the butterflies fly away
Noddin’ my head like yeah
Moving my hips like yeah,
And I got my hands up,
They’re playin my song
I know I’m gonna be ok
Yeah, It’s a party in the USA
Yeah, It’s a party in the USA”

My daughter immediately began bopping around in her carseat.

“I love this song, Mommy!” she yelled.

I too thought it was a catchy little ditty and started drumming my fingers on the steering wheel.

Then, I found out it was Miley Cyrus.

UGH!

My daughter has no clue who Miley Cyrus is. Nor does she know anything about her Disney produced alter ego Hannah Montana… and I would like to keep it that way for a few more decades. That means I will not be running out to the store to purchase or download “Party In The U.S.A.” or any other Miley tune. However, if the can’t-get-you-out-of-my-head song comes on the radio, to appease my daughter, I let it play.

But so does every radio station on my car’s tuner.

You can’t escape that song. It’s on everywhere ALL.THE.TIME.

And you only have to hear a couple notes to get it stuck in your head forEVAH!

Yet, there’s no way I can turn it off mid-Miley, now that my kindergartner kicks it each time she hears it.

The things I do for that kid.

For the love of everything non-Miley Cyrus in the world, someone please recommend something that will help purge this drivel from my head.

And don’t suggest a loaded .45—-I’ve still got Christmas gifts to wrap.
