When You Love Someone -Part 2

I’m back, continuing to tell you about our together day. While Mick and I were listening to the radio yesterday in the early evening, a caller rang in to pass on her Christmas message. She wanted to say Merry Christmas to her husband and said she ‘after 43 years married she loved him exactly as she did when she first met him.’

Later a man rang in. He’d been engaged 13 years. No, that’s not mistyped -13 years before he married his obviously patient woman. They’ve now been married 30 years.

Then later a woman rang to say Merry Christmas to her husband and tell him how much she loved him. They had been married for 68 years! A story like that brings tears to my eyes and makes me realize Mick and I have a lot of years to go yet. Mick and I listened to all this as we waited for the sun to dip below the horizon and darkness to come.

When darkness finally fell, we toured around looking at Christmas lights and decorations. Some, with their inflatable penguins and snowmen looked ridiculous in Australia where it is summer. Most places never see snow even in winter, though a few place like the Blue Mountains and Orange, (where we used to live) had a snowfall recent when a sudden cold snap came through. But it was an anomaly.

One house, decorated with myriad hangings lights all golden, the biggest star I have eve seen and the fence studded with small star lights looked effective. It seems the economic downturn has not stopped people from wanting to decorate their homes with Christmas lights, since several shops recently reported running out of lights.

We came home and turned our few blue and white lights on (Yes, we finally got them up but that’s another blog) and switched the radio back on to listen to the countdown of top 5 hits from this week in 1959. They included songs by Bill Haley and Crash Craddock, as well as Aussie stars of the 50s and 60s – Col Joye and Johnny O’Keefe.

Our dog sat on Mick’s lap bopping along to the music with him. She’d given me up when I produced nail polish remover to do my nails. Something in that drives her crazy. She turns circles, rubs her face along the floor and glares at me.

Interspersed with the top 5 hits of 1959, callers rang as they had all night to vote for their favorite Christmas carol. By the time we turned it off and went to bed it looked like White Christmas would be the winner, sadly beating all the traditional carols like Silent Night, The First Noel etc.

As we went to bed we both remarked what an enjoyable day and evening it had been. We hadn’t done anything special. But it was fun because we were together.
