Old Man Winter is relentless. As if the bitter cold weren’t enough, now we’re dealing with a wicked ice storm that’s threatening to bring our city to a standstill.
Of course, as I sit here and complain about our latest round of putrid weather, there are likely some people loving every minute of it. I suppose the ice is pretty to look at as the moonlight glistens off of its surface… provided that surface doesn’t belong to the power lines that help keep the lights on in my home.
Believe it or not, I am not a winter hater. I actually find the season to be quite peaceful and have created many scrapbook pages highlighting winter’s outstanding attributes. In addition to featuring photos of my daughter making the most of the snow and cold, I typically include some simple embellishments, such as winter-themed stickers, stamps and die cuts.
Another way to spice up a winter-themed page design is to add short poems that enhance the feel of your layout. This is an especially wise move if you don’t have a lot of memorabilia to showcase or you don’t have the time, energy or inspiration to create a journaling block.
Personally, I am not a huge fan of long poems. I like to use ones that are short and sweet. By doing so, I don’t overcrowd the page or make the words the focus of the layout. For me, short poems should be used like embellishments and should coordinate with the photos featured on the page.

A Little Snowflake

I watched a little snowflake
Come sailing from the sky;
It played a joke on me when
It fell right in my eye!
Another little snowflake
Came dancing toward the south;
It looked at me a minute…
Then landed in my mouth!
They seemed like little fairies
Upon a holiday,
Just out for fun and frolic
and asking me to play!
