After I put the finishing touches on my holiday-themed memory books, I usually take a break from scrapbooking for a few weeks. January is typically a quiet month in our family. We celebrate very few birthdays and even fewer anniversaries during the first month of the year. However, since I am obligated to create a monthly layout for my Year in Review scrapbook, I still have to come up with at least one event to scrap.
In years past I have crafted pages with photos of my daughter’s outdoor winter adventures, including skiing, sledding, ice skating, and snowman-building. So far this year all I have are a couple pictures of her making snow angels in our backyard. The shots are not that exciting. In fact, I am so uninspired by them that I’ve decided to go an entirely different direction with this month’s layout. Instead of outdoor winter activities, I will be creating a layout featuring all the fun we have indoors when the weather outside is frightful.
Last night my daughter and I made two loaves of Cinnamon Chocolate Chip Quick Bread. While she mixed and poured I snapped her in action with the new camera I got for Christmas. I plan to use the photos in a layout illustrating how the kitchen is truly the heart of our home. This incredibly versatile layout can be crafted any time during the course of the year. Just think of all of the memories and traditions that are made in that one room, and work them into a page design.
For example, if Sunday night is family dinner night at your home, then capture photos of your entire clan cooking together. Decide on a favorite meal and include a picture of each family member helping to get the food on the table. Embellish the page with stickers, stamps and die cuts of chef’s hats, aprons and dishes. Don’t forget to include a copy of the recipes featured in the photos. In addition, you could add notes detailing why the recipes in a journaling block. Another option is to create a layout which features photos of the first meal you made for your spouse, the first cake you baked for your child, or the first time you made a new dish that ended up being a family favorite.
