Wisconsin Genealogy Resources

Welcome to WisconsinThe state of Wisconsin is known as “The Badger State”. This is probably why part of their Medicaid program is called BadgerCare. Are you looking for more information about your ancestors who once lived in Wisconsin? There are many Wisconsin genealogy resources that can help you. Start with one that is in this blog!

Interment.net has cemetery records online. Start by putting the first and last name of your ancestor into the search engine at the top of their page. Or, you can start by choosing a Wisconsin county. If there is a link, it indicates that Interment.net has information about records from cemeteries that are located within that county. At a glance, it appears that about half of the counties have that information.

GeneaLinks also has a search engine at the top of their page. Put your ancestor’s first and last name into it. Choose which type of record to search through: vital, birth, death, marriage, divorce, or “Genealogy”. GeneaLinks also has helpful information for genealogists who are new to Wisconsin genealogy. Did you know the state of Wisconsin issues two different types of documents: certified copies and non-certified copies?

Ancestry.com has a page that is filed with links to all of their Wisconsin genealogy collections of records. To access the majority of them, you will need to have an Ancestry.com membership. Once in a while, a collection might be offered for free. Return to this page often. Ancestry.com does a great job of making it clear when a collection is new, has been updated, or is currently offered for free access.

FamilySearch has a Wiki page about the state of Wisconsin. You can find links to more FamilySearch Wiki pages about each and every county in the state. There also are several links that will take you to more FamilySearch Wiki pages that are about a specific collection of FamilySearch Wisconsin record collections.

Facebook has a Community Page for FamilySearch Wisconsin Genealogy Research. This is a great resource for genealogists who want to connect with other genealogists who are also working on Wisconsin genealogy right now. You can also find links to FamilySearch collections of Wisconsin records.

Cyndi’s List might be the most comprehensive list of links to genealogy online. If it exists on the internet, Cyndi’s List probably has a link to it. They have a page called “United States – Wisconsin”. Choose one of their many categories to browse through. Categories include: “Birth, Marriage, Death”, “Census”, “Counties”, “Military”, “Newspapers”, and more!
