Would You Get Secondhand Gifts?

yard sale

Today we were at a large local thrift store. We love this store, and most of our clothes that aren’t hand-me-downs come from there. Yes, even my clothes once lived at this store, and I’m perfectly happy with that.

We get other goodies from this store too. Kitchen items, sports items, and baskets for cookies are all there. Today I got some yarn for our Brownie group’s project, a parrot for my daughter’s Halloween costume, and shirts for my daughter. I also got Christmas gifts.

This might seem tacky. Perhaps it is tacky. I am likely quite tacky without realizing it, and this is also fine with me. However, in my world, sometimes the best Christmas and birthday gifts come from the thrift store. Some of them can only be found there! Here’s my list of fabulous goodies that I’ve sourced for secondhand gifts this year:

I got my sister two build your own historic castle kits from Ebay. These are from the 1940s, I think, and for someone who studies cultural perceptions of medieval times, they’re the perfect gift. They’re more of the cool vintage Christmas gift.

Today, I also got a warm fleece blanket for my husband and daughter to share as they watch hockey. It has hockey players all over it.

For my daughter, who is into Harry Potter, I got an unused Harry Potter journal.

For my grandma, who has been asking for a Scrabble board that turns around on a platform, I found just that. Amazing! They’re quite expensive normally, and this one was a secondhand splurge, but it’s just what she’s been looking for.

When you’re looking for gifts, do you consider secondhand to be cool and vintage or just plain tacky? If you do think it’s tacky, would you buy something that was completely new, just in the thrift store? Would you get something that’s a vintage find?

Recycling is so important. This year, most of our gifts will be homemade, experiences, or secondhand items. Just call me the Queen of Tacky. I’ll enjoy it.
