You Know You Need a Vacation When…

Few people out there deserve a vacation more than parents of special needs kids. It’s an all-consuming job that can feel imprisoning and emotionally draining. Of course we love our kids with all our hearts, but sometimes we just need a break. Here’s my take on the situation:

You know you need a vacation when…

  1. You’ve sent your child to the naughty stool so many times that it collapses from the strain.
  2. The only “nature hike” you get is a trek down the hall to the bathroom.
  3. The 911 operators know you on a first name basis.
  4. The only brush in the house you can find is tiny, pink, and says, “Barbie.”
  5. The last person who had the gall to mention your child’s bad behavior quickly moved out of state.
  6. You’ve become real good at Elmo, Grover, and Oscar the Grouch impersonations.
  7. The pile of laundry on your floor is so high, you could swear there’s somebody hiding in it.
  8. Your last “good read” was the menu at a McDonalds drive-thru.
  9. The inside of your house looks like Chuck E. Cheeses at closing time.
  10. The only “Montego Bay” you’ve ever heard of is a brand of shirts.
  11. For you, taking a “Disney Cruise” means searching the house for your daughter’s Ariel doll.
  12. You get a sunburn from walking outside to the mailbox.
  13. “Bed and breakfast?” It’s a good day if you get a little of either.
  14. The only ancient ruins you’ve seen are your sofa and recliner.
  15. You’ve figured out 614 ways to cook macaroni and cheese.
  16. You’re envious of your son’s field trip to a petting zoo.
  17. A “facial” means getting the peanut butter smudge off your face that’s been there since lunch.
  18. The last trip you remember taking was over somebody’s lego robot on the stairs.
  19. The only “rollercoaster” you’re familiar with are your own mood swings.
  20. Reading this blog makes you feel self-indulgent.
