Home Improvement: Reclaiming Unused Space

If you have an unfinished basement, you may have lots of space that is currently underused or perhaps not being used at all. When this area of the home is dark or unattractive, it is frequently used only minimally for storage.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could transform your basement without enduring a total renovation? You can! Instead of storing boxes, bins, and bags of stuff in the basement, you can make into a functional, livable space, with less time, effort, and expense than you might think.

If your basement or another unused space is structurally sound, but rough instead of finished, there are several different options you can employ to make these spaces more attractive and livable.

Getting started is the hardest part, because of course the first step is a thorough cleaning. The good thing is that once the basement is clean and free of clutter, you can begin creating an inviting new space or several new areas. After cleaning, one of the most straightforward options is painting. A fresh coat of crisp, clean paint on the ceilings, walls, and floors will immediately lighten and brighten the basement, making it more inviting.

There are many other tried and true methods you can use as well as a great assortment of new products designed especially for use in unfinished spaces. You can have a basement finishing system designed and installed for you, or you can design the space, choose the materials, and do the work yourself for a sense of accomplishment (and for the savings).

I will be posting articles with tips and ideas for making unfinished basements into living spaces over the next week that I hope will prove helpful. So, if you’re interested, this weekend is a great time to start getting ready for one of these projects. It may not sound like fun right now, but it will be great when it’s finished!
