Okay, so you don’t have fine china, gold flatware, or crystal goblets with which to set your table. In fact, maybe you don’t even have service for eight, and that’s how many people are coming for dinner! You can mix and match the settings you do have to create a charming effect. Simply alternate the pieces to create a pattern. It will look as if you intentionally set the table this way, instead of looking like mismatched pieces.

Mix your serving pieces as well, to continue the mixed style. Another good way to make this look work is to make linen napkins from fabric the color of one set of dishes then roll them up and tie them with a ribbon that is the color of your other set. Another twist is to “hide” mismatched silverware by wrapping utensils in a napkin and then tying with a bit of raffia. You can also use simple string. Just tie it in a knot and fray the edges.

Alternate glasses as well, if you don’t have enough of one style, or set the table with tall glasses for adults and smaller ones for children.

If you have some glass bottles or jars, fill them with water and a few drops of food coloring to make a centerpiece. Make the water level different in each jar for more interest. Use food coloring the same colors as your sets of dishes. You can also fill a clear, glass bowl with water and food coloring and drop a few small artificial flowers on top to float.

Candles are also inexpensive but they add a great deal of ambience. Pick up a pair of tapered candles, line a few votives up down the center of the table, or simply mix and match different candles that you already have around the house.
