Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

March 2nd happens to be the birthday of one of the most famous children’s book authors of all time – Dr. Seuss. While the schools may not be closed, this is as much a day to be celebrated as any other, so why not throw a Dr. Seuss Birthday Party for your family and friends?

There are many ways to celebrate Dr. Seuss-style and live it up on 3/2. For starters, you can hurry over to Amazon.com and purchase some of Dr. Seuss’ books that you may not own yet – titles such as Horton Hears A Who and The Lorax (our favorites) or pop into your local library and check out any number of Seuss classics. Thanks to modern technology, you now have the option of downloading the audio book version of just about any Dr. Seuss story via iTunes. These are wonderful ways to present the stories without the images of the book and bring the tales to life your child’s imagination. The audio-only stories are also terrific for road trips.

Next, schedule a Friday evening (or day for you homeschoolers) Dr. Seuss movie marathon! Many of his books have been turned into films – both animated and more recently, big Hollywood live action adventures starring very famous screen actors Jim Carrey and Mike Myers as The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat respectively. Keep in mind that the newer films may not be appropriate for younger viewers. In comparison, the old school animated versions may be better suited for your whole gang.

Before the movie festival in your living room begins, fill our family’s bellies with Green Eggs and Ham and have breakfast for dinner! Simply adding green food coloring to scrambled eggs and diced ham steak makes this dish very easy to prepare. You could also get a bit more adventurous by tossing in some fresh parsley and/or green bell pepper.

Finally, make a homemade hat a la The Cat in the Hat using a brown paper lunch bag and coloring it with red and white stripes, or create the stripes using narrow strips of construction paper.

Have a great party and enjoy watching, reading and listening to all things Dr. Seuss on March 2nd!
