Cookbook Review: Miserly Meals by Jonni McCoy

It isn’t very often that I give a book review that indicates that the book is mediocre at best or not worth even checking out of the library, but there is always a first time. Unfortunately, this book is Miserly Meals by Jonni McCoy, and it aims to provide “healthy, tasty recipes under 75 cents per serving,” something that we could probably all use. Out of all of the recipes in the book, I choose three promising ones and went to work. On the positive side, McCoy does take advantage of low-cost ingredients and provides plenty of good information, such … Continue reading

The Take-Away Experience

Some people ought never to be let near the public. I’m sure most of you will know what I mean and have encountered at least one of these people over time in shops. I mean the person who either ignores you when you go into a takeaway food shop and keeps chatting on the phone or talking to someone else that it is plainly not a customer. Or maybe it’s the person who gives you such a sour, grumpy look when they ask for your order. We had this experience recently in a takeaway food store. We waited and waited. … Continue reading

Five of Nashville’s Best Breakfast Spots

Whether you’re a visitor to the Music City or a local, nothing starts off a day better than a good breakfast. Below are my picks for five of Nashville’s best breakfast spots. 1. The Loveless Motel and Cafe – Fried chicken and made-from-scratch biscuits beloved by hungry travelers navigating Highway 100 made the Loveless Cafe famous, but it also serves up an excellent Southern-style breakfast. Besides the abundance of good food, the fun of eating at the Loveless Cafe is the setting. The restaurant proper resides in what was once a home, circa early 1900s. (The original house still remains, … Continue reading

The Sneaky Chef: A Cookbook Review

I admit, I have wanted a “Sneaky Chef” cookbook for awhile now. Ever since she came out with her first cookbook geared towards kids. I have to say that it was Libby that dubbed the moniker “The Sneaky Mama” and it was long before The Sneaky Chef cookbooks came out. But what can I say? Great minds think alike and while I don’t share any of the same recipes (nor have I published them into a cookbook), I wholeheartedly endorse hiding healthy food into food my family finds palatable. I can hide almost anything, and not even hide it that … Continue reading

Stew Leonard’s

A good friend who regularly reads my blogs recently commented on the fact that I’ve not once written a blog reviewing Stew Leonard’s. I thought she was mistaken. Surely I’ve written something about my beloved grocery store with “WOW” factor. But she was right. . .until now: my first ever review of Stew Leonard’s grocery stores. Stew’s is not a normal grocery store and there are only a few stores in New England. It is family owned but it is worth the trip at least once, even if it’s a little out of your way. Each Stew’s has a petting … Continue reading

Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Manhattan boasts some of the best eateries in New York but generally speaking, I find the really good eats are to be found in mom and pop stores strung in little known places. However, those little known places may boast great food but they also have tiny little spaces hardly suitable for a party of 8, that includes 5 wiggly children. Finding both good food AND a place that has atmosphere entertaining enough for everyone–that’s the real challenge. So it was with a little trepidation that we decided to try out Ellen’s Stardust Diner last night. Ellen’s Stardust Diner sits … Continue reading

Parkesdale Farm Market Strawberry Shortcake

As many of you know, I just came back from Florida on vacation with my family. Of course you can look forward to lots of restaurant reviews because if there’s anything that Delps know how to do well–we know how to find good food! So today, I present you with the first of such blogs. . .a tale of our adventure to the Parkesdale Farm Market to sample their world famous strawberry shortcake. Plant City (also home of the Florida Strawberry Festival) is about 45 minutes away from Orlando. That’s right folks! My in-laws were so convinced that this was … Continue reading

The Best Peanut Butter in the World

Maybe I’m biased because this cozy little sandwich shop is tucked away in Greenwich Village. Or maybe it’s because they add white chocolate chunks to one of their peanut butter flavors and white chocolate is my absolute favorite candy. But I think that the Peanut Butter Company’s homemade peanut butter is the best peanut butter in the world–hands down. The Peanut Butter Company is not just a sandwich shop but almost an ‘ode’ to peanut butter. These people are seriously passionate about peanut butter. They boast a full menu with a variety of creative sandwiches like the Elvis (grilled peanut … Continue reading

Ben & Jerry’s: The Socially Conscientious Ice Cream

I started writing this blog because it was recently announced that the popular ice cream brand was going to name its newest flavor after political comedian Stephen Colbert. The newest flavor, Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream will feature vanilla ice cream with fudge covered pieces of waffle cone and swirls of caramel. Of the honor, Colbert says: “Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case.” (In case you’re not a Colbert fan. . .yes, that was wry humor dripping in sarcasm. . .we think.) Ben … Continue reading

How Burger Heaven Earned Our Business

We spend an inordinate amount of time on the Upper East Side. My husband works there and my kids take their lessons there. We often finish with our day around 5pm leaving us to come home around 6:30pm–well past dinner making time for our family. So on occasion we try to find somewhere to eat. However, if you’ve read any of my blogs at all, you should know this is no easy feat. First of all, finding a restaurant in Manhattan that has room for a double stroller is not easy. Secondly, figuring ways to tame and conquer the formidable … Continue reading
