Baby’s First Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving. I can’t help but think of Thanksgiving one year ago today. I was pregnant with my little baby and very anxious for him to come. In fact, I had made up my mind that I was going to have him over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend since he was due on December 3, and I had my other two kids almost a week early. It was perfect timing. However, it was not the right timing because my little guy decided to come 4 days late. He was born on December 7th. I remember that Thanksgiving like it was … Continue reading

Preparing For Labor

Like all good things, each pregnancy will come to an end. What awaits at the end of pregnancy? Labor and delivery. While I am a firm believer in not telling labor stories to anyone who is pregnant, I am also a firm believer in being prepared for the experience of labor. Preparedness for labor is less about which childbirth class you take or which technique you plan to use than it is about having made a plan for how you would like to proceed. At its most basic, preparing for labor includes talking to your health care provider and getting … Continue reading

Celiac Disease, Autism, PTSD, and More!

This week, the Special Needs Blog included a wide variety of topics. There were blogs about Celiac Awareness Day, things that may cause autism, PTSD, a special needs friendly playground, support groups, and a bizarre story about involving an isolation room. These blogs went up between September 10, 2012, and September 15, 2012. September 13 is National Celiac Awareness Day National Celiac Awareness Day is a day to honor the birthday of Samuel Gee MD, the pediatrician who published the first clinical description of celiac disease. It is also a day to bring awareness to what celiac disease is, and … Continue reading

Seasons of Testing

There are certain stages and circumstances in life that a married couple goes through in which the relationship is tested. While everyday can certainly be a test and an indicator of the strength of your relationship, some life events seem to bring out what truly lies underneath. One of the earliest circumstances I can remember my marriage being greatly tested in is about a year after we had our first child. I was pregnant with our second child when in the third month I miscarried. We each handled things very differently. Because of that, there were times we just weren’t … Continue reading

The Farmer’s Market Part I

This summer has brought wonderful opportunities to spend time outside enjoying some of the things make the Midwest a great place to live. Because of the early start of the growing season, our local farmer’s market boasted fresh homegrown produce early in the season as well. I have always been a huge fan of the farmer’s market. Being able to get high quality produce and other goods that are produced locally improves my outlook on life in general. Needless to say, I have been taking full advantage of our Saturday morning farmer’s market this summer. Unlike my typical errand running, … Continue reading

Did Someone Really Just Ask Me That?

When you are expecting a child, people may ask you all kinds of strange questions. It is almost as if your growing mid section sends a message to the general public that they can just come on up and ask you whatever they want to know. One question that I got asked a lot during my second pregnancy was whether I thought that I could possibly love another child as much as I love my first born son. Whenever I was asked that question, my reply was that of course I could – why else would we be having another … Continue reading

A Baby Naming Story

A fun part of family history is sharing the stories behind how each person in the family got his or her name. A while ago, I was discussing how my husband and I were having trouble selecting a name for our baby. Our baby naming story for our first son was pretty straightforward. One night my husband suggested a name and I thought that it was just perfect. His name is Dylan James Delaney, and his middle name, James, is my father’s name. I had always wanted to use my father’s name as a middle name if I had a … Continue reading

Making The Night Shift Work For Your Family

Yesterday I talked a little bit about parents who choose to work the night shift. If you are wondering how it works on a practical level, I have decided to discuss that today. After trying a couple of different approaches to adjusting your family’s schedule to accommodate a parent working the night shift at home you will most likely find a solution that works for your family. When a family or a couple thinks of each day as a twenty four hour period of time, it is easier to find creative ways to do or have the things that you … Continue reading

Hail the Returning Aunt

Oh! To be an aunt! What a wonderful thing it is. My son loves his aunts. He has lots of them and he loves each one of them a great deal. A lot. So much that it’s impossible to gauge his sadness when one of them leaves. This year alone two of his aunts went off to college. This was in some ways a terrible thing. We’d been away for a number of years and our son hadn’t had a lot of time to spend with his aunts. The summer was full of fun times to be spent with them, … Continue reading

Twin Sisters Give Birth on the Same Day

Two twin sisters in Indiana ended up giving birth on the same day. This was unexpected, because one of the twins was supposed to give birth a bit later than the other. Instead, their babies ended up sharing the same birthday. Are their twins in your family tree? The discovery of ancestors who were twins are one of the things that can make genealogy research interesting. It could make you want to search through old family photos, to see how closely the twins resembled each other. Or, you might want to do some additional research, to see if there was … Continue reading
