Things To Know About Insurance Brokers

Navigating through the jungle of health insurance options can be overwhelming. Many people are using the services of insurance brokers to help them make informed choices about health insurance. It has been said that in 2014 there will be health insurance exchanges set up, that allow consumers to quickly and easily compare the cost of one insurance policy to another one. Until then, consumers are on their own, unless they seek assistance from an insurance broker. The New York Times has an article that describes how one married couple hired the services of an insurance broker to help them find … Continue reading

My Last Blog

This is going to be my last blog as the Adoption Blogger for Families.com. I’m looking forward to spending the summer with my kids, possibly working at their school, and taking on new writing projects. I may well guest blog occasionally for this or other Families blogs. It seems the Adoption Blog will continue, so I hope this blog, along with Families’ forums, can be a source of information and community for adoptive parents, adoptees, and birth parents. Yesterday I could think of a million things to say in my last few blogs and wondered how I would fit it … Continue reading

Going to Trader Joes

I am a woman of product loyalties. This is something I share with my husband. We only own Mac computers, for example. We nearly broke our hearts when we decided to buy a minivan that wasn’t a Ford, and the debate is still on about the merits of Sony versus Panasonic VCRs (yes, even in the DVD and Blu-ray age). The loyalty extends to grocery stores as well. There is one chain store that I like to frequent, and when we moved, I was reassured that there was a location near our new home. I like knowing where the different aisles … Continue reading

Realtors Are Going Green

With a more eco-friendly trend on the rise it would only make sense that certain professions would follow suit. Realtors are starting to recognize the need to understand industry trends and green living. As a result, the National Association of Realtors has created a training program called “EcoBroker.” Realtors can actually earn a green designation through this training program. Once a realtor has successfully completed the program they are referred to as “ecobrokers.” They do everything that a typical real estate agent does; however, the added benefit is that they do everything through the eyes of an environmentalist. They look … Continue reading

Fortunately, there are ways to save if you are determined to make your child’s Disney dreams come true. Ask a Pets Blogger: Crate Time

We recently adopted a ten month old terrier mix from the shelter. My wife and I both work, and the pup spends eight to ten hours in his crate. He’s very good about going into his crate when it’s time to go to work, but more often than not we come home to a crate full of accidents! The shelter said he was housebroken… but maybe he isn’t. Is ten hours too long to leave him alone? Congratulations on the new addition to your family, and thanks for getting him from a shelter. There are lots of awesome dogs (and … Continue reading

Broken Ring, Broken Heart

Could there be anything worse than losing a wedding ring? I’m not sure, but there’s something that’s equally as disturbing: Losing the diamond from your engagement ring. (The real answer is actually: “Plenty!” I found that out the hard way, though. The day after I lost my diamond was D-day.) The Discovery The night before the D-day oncologist appointment, while Wayne hung out with my mom, I took the opportunity to make a run to Target. After that I needed to stop at Publix. It was en route from Target to Publix that I went to scratch an itch on … Continue reading

Star Updates: Brokeback the Musical and Leno Rescues McMahon

BROKEBACK THE MUSICAL Hey, if they can do it for “Little House on the Prairie” then why not “Brokeback Mountain?” The love story portrayed on the big screen will soon be revived and sung in one of the nation’s largest theaters thanks to the New York City Opera. The group just commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose the music for the opera, which will be based on the Academy Award-winning film. Much like the popular movie, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger, the opera will follow the 20-year love affair of two cowboys who share a secret romance … Continue reading

Going “Home” – Who Will Be Waiting for Me?

Ever since her stroke last Tuesday, my mom has been talking about “going home.” How her people are waiting for her. Aunt LaLa (her mom’s sister), Pearl (her sister), her mom, and her dad…all of whom have passed away. Yesterday she was particularly adamant that she had to get up and get going home because her people were there waiting for her. “Your people are here, Dorothy,” Wayne said. “Courtney, me, Murphy and the cats. You’re not going home just yet. No one’s there.” “That’s true. I do have to go by myself. But I don’t want to. I don’t … Continue reading
