Celiac Disease and Heredity

Some things that run in families, like Grandpa’s twinkly blue eyes or Aunt Mary’s dimpled cheeks are traits that we can look forward to seeing again and again in future generations. There are also genetic disorders that run in families, illnesses that we hope not to see in new additions to our families. Celiac disease, also referred to as Celiac sprue, is a genetic disorder that is characterized by an extreme immune response to gluten. At one time, Celiac disease was thought to be a rare childhood ailment. Today, however, as many as one in every one hundred and thirty … Continue reading

Christmas in Summer

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve here in Australia. That means the last day for shopping and getting all those last minute food items. Not the ham though, I got that today. It also means I will be busy cooking pork and chicken and making babaganoush. Given a summer climate we don’t go into for roasts dinners on Christmas Day. Years ago we decided to go for what its better suited to the climate and have cold cooked meats and an array of salads. Tabouli is always one of our family’s favorites. But some of the other salads vary. As well as … Continue reading

Food and Allergies- A Solution

For years we’ve been hearing the benefits of honey. When I was a child, my mother used honey and lemon juice for sore throats. Honey for many people is a great addition to a recipe and can be substituted for sugar. But some of us are allergic to honey. In my case it causes tinnitus. Sounds bizarre but I have proved it over time to be true. Tinnitus is that constant ringing noise in your ears. In my case it sounded like I had a steam train in my head. It gets worse when it is quiet and makes it … Continue reading

Suggestions for the Herb Garden

One of the things no home should be without is the herb garden. I use a lot of herbs when cooking to add flavor. Even the smallest garden can have room for herbs. Even if you live in a unit all you need is a sunny spot and a few decent sized pots. So if you’re thinking of planting herbs here are a few suggestions. Mint Mint adds a lovely fresh taste to salads and is also good when added to a fruit salad or fruit punch or cool drink. Mint is better in pots as planted in the garden … Continue reading

Berry Yoghurt Dessert

While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie Julie and Julia, two things stood out to me. One, is don’t go and see this movie before a meal or if you’re on a diet, the emphasis on food is sure to make you feel even hungrier. The second thing I thought was what a lot of fuss went into some of the recipes and I couldn’t see myself doing that. I’m very much a no fuss cook, which is why the recipe I’m going to give you today appeals to me. It has few ingredients, is easily made, and tastes beautiful. What … Continue reading

Quick and Easy Gluten Free Pizza

When I first discovered I needed to be on a gluten free diet, one of the hardest things was not doing without cakes or bread or cookies, it was no pizza. Yes, I know there are gluten free flours around but making my own pizza base was all too fiddly. Pizzas in our house were a quick weekend meal not something that needed a lot of time and effort. We’d been used to using Lebanese bread as a pizza base. Then I found the easy answer. So here’s my solution for gluten free quick and easy pizza. Ingredients 2 gluten … Continue reading

Moving House

Moving house, I heard recently on the radio, can be as stressful as divorce or the death of a spouse. It can be a time of emotional upheavals, depending on how long you have been in the one place and how attached to it you are. But it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. It can be a good opportunity to take stock in your life and in your marriage. We have moved a lot of in our marriage, the last being just over two years ago. It didn’t quite go according to our plan and there were times … Continue reading

The Secret to Enjoying Married Life

‘The secret to enjoying life is being thankful for what each day brings.’ That’s what the anonymous quote on my calendar for today says. While I agree with that, maybe for the purposes of this blog, we could change that to read ‘the secret to enjoying married life is to be thankful for what each day brings.’ One of the things that is great about my husband is that he is thankful for the things I do for him. Yes, I did make his pie yesterday, even though I hate making pies and things that require pasty. I hate having … Continue reading
