Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation: Spending Less in California

Continuing my series “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation” today we are looking at more ways to save in California. As I mentioned in my previous blogs the fact that financial analysts are warning that we are on the brink of a recession has some contemplating giving up their annual family vacations in order to spare their household’s bottom line. However, I’m here to show you that a little planning can go a long way to help save your family’s road trip. If you simply spend some time researching travel attractions that don’t require you to spend a ton of … Continue reading

More Ways to Save Money on Your Summer Vacation

In my previous blog I told you about a new series I’m starting called “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation.” With the economy faltering some families are considering giving up their annual family vacations in order to spare the household’s bottom line. However, as you saw in my last blog with a little planning there are ways you can explore the nation’s top tourist spots without going bankrupt in the process. This week I am turning the spotlight on San Diego. Now that you know what attractions you can get into for free here’s a list of some of the … Continue reading

Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation

With the economy slumping, the price of gas at an all time high, and food costs soaring some families are seriously considering staying home this summer instead of embarking on an annual vacation. As such I have decided to create a new series in the TRAVEL blogs called: “Saving Money on Your Summer Vacation.” Each week I will spotlight a popular family friendly vacation destination and list ways you can take in the sights without breaking the bank. Today we begin with San Diego, California. It’s one of the nation’s top tourist destinations, but it is also one of the … Continue reading

Theme Park Travel Tips

My best friend’s family will be traveling from their home in Hawaii to Southern California the day after Christmas. They decided to do away with exchanging Christmas gifts, and instead are using the money they would have spent on presents to take a family trip to Disneyland, SeaWorld, and Legoland. It’s going to be quite a vacation. But, the truth is, I’m not really all that jealous. While I would love to escape the bone-chilling temps this winter I also know southern California (and Florida) can be a stressful destination during the last week of December and first week of … Continue reading

California Wildfires Putting the Heat on Tourist Hot Spots

If you’ve watched even a few minutes of the news in the last week then you seen that parts of California have been reduced to a charred smoky mess. It’s an image tourism officials in Southern California don’t want you to see. As firefighters scramble to extinguish the remaining wildfires, members of San Diego’s Convention and Visitors Bureau are scurrying to do damage control of their own. One official with the group recently told news reporters: “The fires have been a horrible situation, but (the impact on the city) also has been a little overblown. You would think that every … Continue reading

The Nation’s Best Amusement Park

The votes are in and the winner of the best amusement park in the country is… Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. The popular thrill ride park was named the best of the best by readers of Amusement Today. Each year the trade publication surveys hundreds of amusement park guests and uses their feedback to determine the winners of its Golden Ticket Awards competition. This year there were few surprises. Cedar Point won the best park award again—-as it has every year since the awards began. (To read my review of the park, click here.) It probably didn’t hurt … Continue reading

Celebrate Fall In San Diego

Personally, I think San Diego shines all year round. But in the fall, the area plays host to a number of outstanding family friendly events, which makes visiting even more worthwhile. Sure, the city is home to world famous vacation attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, Legoland and SeaWorld, which are open all year long, but if you are looking for unique fall-related special events to attend with your children the city is a premiere destination. Take a look at just some of the kid-friendly festivals that will be getting underway in the next couple of weeks: Fleet Week. … Continue reading

Shopping In San Diego

There’s much more to San Diego than just its world famous zoo. Take shopping for instance. I like to flex my shopping muscle in San Diego at the city’s more eclectic stores. I don’t live anywhere near California so when I do visit I want to leave with something I can’t find back here in the Midwest. That said the following are some of my favorite places to spend money in San Diego: Little Italy Located just northwest of the city’s business center, Little Italy is one of San Diego’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. It’s filled with art galleries and incredible Italian … Continue reading

New Family-Friendly Theme Park—“READ” All About It

It’s a place where literary classics come to life. If you are a fan of famed author Charles Dickens… and you love water rides then consider adding London to your list of summer vacation hotspots. Next month, a new $125-million theme park inspired by the works of the acclaimed author opens in a 70,000-square-foot warehouse in Chatham, 35 miles southeast of London. If you have voracious young readers in your family who can’t get enough of titles such as “The Pickwick Papers,” “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” and “Oliver” you may want to forgo Disney World and head straight for … Continue reading
