4 Tips to Help You Keep Your Resolution

As I blogged yesterday, my New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight – again.  The thing about making weight loss a resolution is that so many people do it (especially after all those holiday pounds!), but many fail to follow through. What can you do to keep your resolution?  There are a few hints from psychologist John Norcross on how to keep those resolutions: Believe it can be done. That’s right – don’t let the haters keep you down, saying “You can’t do that.”  Believe in yourself that you can succeed. Be realistic. I am never going to weigh 120 … Continue reading

Pregnancy Reflections: Diet

The word “diet” is derived from a Greek word that means “way of life.” As the New Year approaches many of us will reconsider out diets and make New Year resolutions to improve our “way of life.” When we consider our diets especially during pregnancy, we must keep in the mind the ancient origin of the word; a way of life, and not merely a temporary period of time used to lose weight, grow a baby, etc. I have learned a lot about the importance of diet as a “way of life” in the last few years. My first pregnancy … Continue reading

We Can Always Do Better

I remember eating lunch with a friend one time and I ordered a salad. Whether or not I am on a health kick, I always enjoy a good salad. I asked for extra dressing and while I didn’t exactly drown my salad, I had a healthy portion of it covering my greens. My friend made the comment that it did no good to have a salad if I was going to pour all that dressing on top of it. Well, I begged to differ. Wasn’t a salad with lots of dressing better than the juicy, bacon-laden, dripping with cheeseburger and … Continue reading

When the “Want” Isn’t There

In my last blog I talked about the “start again” routine that so many of us battle. We will start again on Monday, after the next holiday and the list of excuses goes on. When you get serious about fitness there is no “start again” thinking going on. Now is the time. But I also talked about how you have to want to get in shape, lose weight, eat healthier or whatever else you have purposed to change. Yet the truth is that many of us don’t. I mean, sure, on a surface level we want to but if we … Continue reading

The “Start Again” Routine

So in my last blog I talked about tossing aside the idea of setting New Year’s Resolutions for fitness. I touched a bit on how it’s something that we have to want to change. There has to be a desire inside of us to make a positive difference in our health. Here is the next thing I think is important to get into our minds. We have to stop toying with the whole “start again” routine. I have said it myself, “I will start again after this celebration or this holiday.” “I will start again next Monday.” You fill in … Continue reading

Holly Jolly Scrapbooks

You can’t go anywhere these days without getting a huge helping of Christmas cheer. I think that’s what it is. Okay, maybe it’s more commercial coaxing. Regardless, if you don’t know Christmas is coming then you must be living under a rock, because even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, every retailer on earth is making it known that December 25th is well on its way. Count my local scrapbook store in as one of the mom and pop businesses that really relies on the holidays to turn a healthy profit. The store looks like the inside of Santa’s workshop. … Continue reading

Just Another Meatless Monday

When I read this story, the Bangles “Just Another Manic Monday” ran through my mind. But, the Monday I am going to write about today isn’t manic, but meatless. That’s right – meatless. I’ve preached meatlessness (a word I apparently just made up) before as a way to be green and healthy at the same time. And now, we have an actually campaign called Meatless Mondays. Meatless Mondays was created by Sid Lerner and Lerner knows a thing or two about advertising. He had a 50 year advertising career in New York City, including the now famous “Squeeze the Charmin” … Continue reading

Will You be Mistaken for Santa this Christmas?

Believe it or not Christmas is 92 days away! That is three months and 2 days to fit into that Christmas dress you have been dying to wear. Will you do it? I know this year I do not want to worry I’ll be mistaken for Mrs. Claus if I decide to wear red. This could be Christmas number 5 that I wanted to wear this one skirt in particular but can’t get my sugar plum bottom into it. I keep telling myself that I have an excuse seeing as how I have a knee injury that requires me to … Continue reading

Can I homeschool and have a clean house at the same time?

Many new homeschooling moms ask, “When do I have the time to clean the house if I am homeschooling all day?” Dividing your day between school and housework can prove difficult. As moms, we tend to think that we have to do it all. We also tend to think that every other mom out there is managing better than we are. There are only so many hours in the day and some days you will have to choose between a good school day and a clean house. Relax, you are not the only homeschooling mom with a dish or two … Continue reading

Resolution Check-Up

It’s been a little over a month since I made my New Year’s Resolutions public here in the Families.com Health Blog. Here’s a quick recap of how I wanted to change my life in 2009 and beyond: Use the exercise room at least once per week. Be more diligent about dusting and vacuuming. Make time for my fiction writing. Be kinder to myself. So far, I haven’t done so well with the workout resolution. I only used the gym ONCE in January, as opposed to once per week. One obstacle I’ve run into is my schedule. I don’t have a … Continue reading
