The Perils of Pornography – Part Two

Today I’m discussing the two types of pornography addicts we typically see in the Church, those who know it’s a sin and are trying to overcome it, and those who don’t see the harm in it. Click here to view part one. To those of you who don’t think there’s anything wrong with pornography, you have been misled by the father of lies. There is absolutely everything wrong with pornography. Let’s break it down. We know that Our Father’s great plan of happiness centers on the family unit. We have been taught that we are an eternal family, that in … Continue reading

Family Matters: Marriage Thicker Than Blood?

How devoted are you to your partner really? Devoted enough that if, for whatever reason, you had to choose between your husband/wife and your own family you’d choose your spouse? “Why on earth would I have to choose between the two, Courtney?” you may be wondering. “Surely nothing could be that bad it couldn’t be worked out.” Sadly, sometimes things are that bad. Sometimes things just can’t be worked out. For instance, sometimes a parent opposes a match so fiercely they throw down an ultimatum: marry him/her and I’ll never speak to you again. When my mom was living with … Continue reading

Baby’s Smile Acts Like a Drug

The miracle of a baby’s smile, how it just instantly melts your heart and makes the sleep deprivation and the stress all worth while, is a powerful thing. Now, researchers have concluded, a baby’s smile not only warms the heart but it affects the brain, and it does so much the same way that a drug might. The smile of an infant sends a trigger to the mother’s brain in the reward center. This is the same area that is considered the pleasure center and responds to the high of alcohol or drugs. A baby’s smile sets off a response … Continue reading

Building Up a Tolerance to Pain Medication

Welcome to blistering headache, day two. My whopper of a headache hung around for most of the day, and came back for a second visit this morning. Nothing says “great start to a day” like a headache. I did get some relief last night when I switched from ibuprofen to aspirin, and I think it was the change in medications that made the difference. I do tend to switch pain relievers every so often. Maybe the ibuprofen wasn’t helping because my body was too used to it? With some pain relievers, your body can build up a tolerance — meaning … Continue reading

When is Divorce an Option?

In 10 Divorce Myths, Heather stated how she rarely reflects on divorce because this is, after all, the Marriage Blog. I don’t like to focus on the Big D either because I believe you get what you give. (Not so much that I’m going to get divorced just from talking about it, but I don’t want to attract thoughts of it and make it a focus in my life.) However, earlier today I wrote Did You Commit to Marriage Before You Even Were? In it I brought up how many of us have learned by example that divorce is okay. … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Making It Work

I may be jumping the gun a bit by saying that anything is working right in Lindsay Lohan’s life, but at the very least the likely-to-be-incarcerated actress has removed herself from a toxic environment—Hollywood. According to the latest reports, the 21-year-old has moved back in with her mom Dina in Long Island, New York… at least temporarily. There’s still no word on where the actress has been staying since her July 24 arrest for DUI, driving with a suspended license and drug possession. But, according to the New York Post, Lilo flew first class to Kennedy airport with her younger … Continue reading

“Hang Up The Phone, We’re On Vacation”

If I had a dime for each time my sister-in-law spat those words out during our Easter vacation… I’d be rich. My two older brothers are cellphone addicts—they take their phones everywhere. I will admit their addiction grew (somewhat) out of necessity. One is a firefighter and the other is the spokesperson for the county’s Department of Emergency Management. So each carries at least two cellphones at all times. Which, of course, means that during our spring vacation there was nary a moment that went by when one of their phones was not ringing. (And frankly, I couldn’t blame them … Continue reading

The Quest For Peace and Quiet

How many times has your family vacation been interrupted by the incessant ringing of your cellphone? What about that weekend trip that was meant to be alone time for you and your spouse… how many times was the peace and quiet shattered by an alert from your husband’s BlackBerry or cellphone? If you answered “many,” then you are clearly not vacationing in the right place. Believe it or not, there are places you can vacation that don’t allow you to reach out and touch anyone with a wireless device. Take for example, California’s Death Valley. Seriously, the place is 3,000 … Continue reading

Are They In or Out of Rehab?

Today, guessing correctly if a celebrity is in or out of rehab has become a bit of a game, thanks to Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.
