A Good Nights Sleep

My bedroom is my favorite room in my house. When I walk in there I know my work is done, I can just relax. Usually I read before bedtime so it’s something I really look forward to. I try to make my bedroom a welcoming haven from the day. The most important part, is the mattress. If you don’t have a good mattress sleep will be difficult and uncomfortable and lead to problems the next day. Keeping your mattress from sagging or developing a dip will go a long way in protecting the investment you’ve made in your mattress. If … Continue reading

Great Math Apps for Primary Kids

It’s the time of year when outside becomes a lot more focus than inside, and so it should. It’s a beautiful time of the year, and the kids need to be outdoors. However, when they’re looking for down time on the computer, and they love math, where can you send them? Here are some of the top math apps that I’m looking at as teaching tools for the summer. My daughter and I both love Math Drills and Math Drills Lite. The lite version is free, and the paid version is only $1.99. While the app is not beautiful, it’s … Continue reading

Homemade Laundry Soap Revisited

As you may have noticed, I’m always looking to save money. Although I want a clean home and clean laundry, I don’t want to have to pay a fortune for the products to get it that way. I’ve tried just about everything, and now I’m trying the rest of the things. Laundry products are a big issue for me. First of all they come in huge plastic jugs. Yes, the plastic is recyclable but it’s even better to not bring it home. Then once you open that huge jug you are basically washing your clothes in a mix of chemicals. … Continue reading

Tummy Troubles

Last night I was reminded how hard it is to be a single mother of a toddler. I kept my friend’s three year old over night. I love spending time with this little girl, we played games and watched movies. In the middle of the night I heard a noise, it was sweet little Ivy, she had thrown up in her bed. Now if there are two parents one of them can clean up the child while the other ones strips the bed. Since there was only me, I cleaned Ivy up and tucked her into my bed. By that … Continue reading

Fresh Air and Sunshine

I can’t seem to shake this cold. All the cleaning and disinfecting does not seem to be helping. Today I decided to let Mother Nature help get rid of the germs. It was sunny but still cold so I turned off the furnace, put on a coat and opened all the doors and windows. I left the house open for about ten minutes. Long enough to be able to feel the outside air moving around in the house and then I shut everything up. Already the house seems cleaner, fresher, like all the negative energy and germs have been blown … Continue reading

Fire Safety At Home

How safe is your home? Do you really take fire prevention seriously or do you think it couldn’t’ happen to you? My grandfather was a fireman so I know firsthand how very real house fires are and how easy it is to prevent one and be prepared should one happen. *Change your smoke detector batteries twice a year. I use daylight savings as my reminder but you could use any two dates that you will remember, set up a reminder on your calendar. *Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen and the garage. Replace every few … Continue reading

Newlywed Gift

Do you know a newly married couple just setting up housekeeping? Still looking for the perfect gift? How about a cleaning basket? The new couple will get plenty of towels, coasters, sheets, glasses and toasters so give them something they will really use. I remember when I moved into my first apartment, cleaning supplies seemed so expensive and no matter what I bought I still needed more, not to mention I needed it most when I could afford it least. It’s not a very romantic gift but it is one they will use, over and over again. You can make … Continue reading

Using Homemade Laundry Detergent

So I made laundry soap. I decided to make the powder instead of the liquid. I didn’t put essential oils in it because it smelled good already. Here is the recipe I used: 1 cup washing soda I cup borax I bar Fels Naptha soap grated I used and old coffee canister to store it in. First I grated in the soap, then added the washing soda and borax and stirred until it was all a finely mixed powder. I used about a tablespoon for a full load of laundry. I wasn’t able to hang the clothes outside because the … Continue reading

The Versatility of Microfiber Cloths

I am really starting to fall in love with microfiber cloths. These were an ingenious invention, if you ask me. My first experience with one was after I had attended a Norwex party. They sell green-friendly cleaning products. I purchased the dust mitt, which to me has been a wonderful way to dust. You save so much money by not having to buy Pledge or other dusting products. But you also avoid the use of chemicals in your home. And you can wash these, so they are reusable. But I am learning that microfiber cloths are more readily available, so … Continue reading

Make Your Bed

Do you make your bed every day? When I was little my mom taught me to make my bed every day. Mom told stressed upon me how made beds are much nicer to get into at night. She was right there. Mom told me that your room could be a little bit messy and still look nice and put together if your bed was made. The funny thing about that was that Mom’s room was never messy. The house was never messy either. You could be sick in bed and Mom would make the bed around you. I am horrible … Continue reading
