Researching Your Ancestors’ Weddings

The recent Royal wedding was just the first of many weddings that will take place this wedding season. Spring and summer are popular times to get married, and chances are that you may be invited to attend one or more weddings for friends and family this year. Of course I must add that around here, wedding season stretches into autumn because the natural beauty of our fall foliage along with mostly pleasant weather creates a breathtaking setting for outdoor weddings. If you are your family’s genealogy expert, you may already be focusing on adding the details of upcoming nuptials to … Continue reading

Setting Boundaries In Your Home-Based Business

One thing that new home-based professionals often have trouble with is establishing boundaries between home and work. Establishing those boundaries now will not only make you feel better about your choice to become a home-based professional, it will help you to establish the good work habits that you need in order to be successful. A good first step is to set a work schedule that is realistic. To determine what a realistic work schedule is for you, take out a calendar and look at a typical week. A calendar that has a lot of space to write on each day … Continue reading

Be Professional in Your Home-Based Business

If you want to be taken seriously in your home business it’s important that you maintain a level of professionalism. This can be difficult when you are not working outside the home. It can be easy to grasp onto a casual look and attitude from within the four walls of your home. I made the joke to my husband last Friday that it was going to be casual Friday at my job. I had on my Green Bay Packer’s shirt in celebration of their playoff game victory. But I really did take my casual Friday seriously because the majority of … Continue reading

You: Your Child’s Biggest Inspiration

You have chosen to school your children at home, and by so doing, you are the adult they see all day, every day, be it during school time, family time, grocery shopping time … you are their main example when it comes to how to be an adult. This is flattering, but it also comes with a lot of responsibility. I’m sure you’re well aware of the dangers of setting a bad example, but I wonder if you’re equally aware of the power of setting a positive example for your child. Because they are home with you all day, they … Continue reading

Adding Color Your Holiday Photos

Trying to snap the perfect photo for your holiday greeting card is not without challenges, especially if you are trying to coordinate multiple family members, including Fido and Fifi. In addition to the setting and composition, color is a huge factor when shooting group shots. I’m not big on having each member of the family don matchy-matchy outfits. However, it is a good idea to employ some semblance of color coordination when shooting a family photo. This is especially true if your group contains five or more subjects. After all, you don’t want one part of the clan to be … Continue reading

Be a Healthy Example to Your Children

We really are our kid’s best example. While we strive to make healthy changes to our lifestyle, we should be making sure that our children embrace the same desire. If we don’t pass on a healthy lifestyle to our children, then we are just setting them up for future health problems, let alone self esteem issues. Obesity is a real problem in this country and it is becoming an increasingly significant problem amongst children. It is easier for children to not be active—computers, television, video game systems, iPods and the like are drawing children to become couch potatoes. As parents … Continue reading

Don’t Let Your Child Become a Bully

Bullying in this country has been out of control for years. For many children it is an everyday occurrence. So who are these bullies and how did they learn to behave this way? Many bullies are just insecure children trying to fit in at school while others are just plain mean with no compassion for others. How do you keep your child from being the kid who other kids fear? Teach Your Child Compassion Children learn by example. If you make fun of people who are different, your child will learn to do the same. Encourage your child to be … Continue reading

Are You Enabling Your Adult Child?

What exactly does it mean to “enable your adult child?” What the act of enabling does is to actively prevent your child from achieving appropriate developmental milestones as they age. Thus continually refusing to make your child/teenager/young adult take responsibility for their omissions and commissions of duty effectively leaves them as underperforming adults. In simpler words, if you do not make your 8-year old carry his or her plate to the kitchen after a meal and dispose of it according to age-appropriate behaviors, you are allowing that child to remain emotionally at that age, in that area of responsibility, longer … Continue reading

Give Your Teen Opportunities to Make Their Own Decisions

Growing up I really had very little opportunity to make my own decisions. Even when I was 18 years old and living at home, very rarely could I make a decision that didn’t have to go past my parents. In fact, I remember wanting to drop a particular college course I was taking (and that I was paying for) but my parents wouldn’t let me. By 19 years of age I was on my own, tired of never being allowed the chance to make a grownup decision. I think I tucked that away somewhere inside of me as a lesson … Continue reading

Your Teen Is Really Listening

For each of my children I have a special picture frame. Right in the middle of the frame there is a plaque that reads, “Journey – “For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord. Jeremiah 29:11 Surrounding that plaque are small windows to put in their pictures. At the bottom left it starts with kindergarten and it goes around to the other side of the frame ending with 11th grade. Then there is a bigger window right below the plaque where you put their senior picture. It is neat to look at that picture frame and … Continue reading
