If you are contemplating selling your home during a recession, you may be wondering if this is the rights time. Although there is a lot of competition out there and fewer people are buying, the fact is that some homes are still selling quickly. Some of these homes are even selling for more than their list price? How is this possible when everyone is saying that this is the wrong time to try to sell a home? The homes that sell have certain things in common. Take a look at this list to see if your home will sell in … Continue reading

Macaroni and Cheese – Life Skills Style

In the aftermath of Kyle’s bullying incident, things have gone much better for him at school. His schedule was re-arranged so that he would not attend class with the two boys who harassed him. He started taking a life skills/cooking class—which I was hesitant about at first, because it was specifically for cognitively-impaired kids. The curriculum consists of activities like learning to use public transportation and purchasing items at a grocery store. Perhaps I just hoped if I pushed him along, despite his autism, Kyle would be able to stay very close to the mainstream, only needing a bit of … Continue reading

Running a Pet Care Business: Chatting with Marlene Richardson, Former Pet Care Professional

Marlene Richardson with her pooch Zeus. Photo provided by Ms. Richardson and used with her permission. Meet Marlene “Marly” Richardson, a neighbor of mine. We met because we both walk our dogs. One day we got to talking about our pets (she has four others in addition to Zeus: Tipsy, a free-roaming house rabbit; Pip the guinea pig; and two doves, Cisco and Cecilia) and our love for animals. Somehow my being a Pets Blogger came up and she mentioned how she’d been a pet sitter. I thought, “How interesting. That’d make a neat blog.” So I asked if she’d … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Airline Tickets for $10… Now We’re Cooking

AIRLINE TICKETS FOR $10 It’s no joke—-Skybus Airlines is currently offering tickets for 10 bucks. So… what’s the catch? (Yes, there’s always a catch.) Catch #1–Even if you purchase your $10 tickets now you won’t be able to use them until December. That’s when the carrier begins service from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Right now, the rock-bottom price is being offered on flights from Milwaukee to Columbus, Ohio, which some of you travelers already know is Skybus Airlines’ hub. From there the airline is offering additional deals (many require purchasing a second ticket) to other cities Skybus flies to, including sunny locales … Continue reading

A Chance to Improve Your Social and Personal Skills

I don’t mean to seem like an overly-optimistic Pollyanna, but there really are all sorts of personal development opportunities that come with life as a single parent. One is that we have the chance to expand and improver our social and personal skills in ways we might not if we are partnered or married. Think of it–as a partnered parent, you don’t have to reach out to the outer world as often and don’t have to ask for help, look for alternative ways to deal with transportation, child care, social activities, etc. I know that as a single parent, I … Continue reading

Sleuths and Guide Dogs: The Many “Eyes” of Joani Ascher, Part I

Author and Seeing Eye puppy raiser, Joani Ascher “Eyes” seem to be a theme when it comes to Joani Ascher, author of the Wally Morris Mystery series from Avalon Books. For one, she spends many a day crafting intrigue for her character, Wally (who, don’t let the name fool you, is a woman), to become entangled with. Wally’s not a private eye exactly, but she’s definitely a crime-solving sleuth of sorts. For another, Ms. Ascher raises Seeing Eye puppies. I asked her if she’d have time to spare from her writing and puppy duties to answer a few questions. To … Continue reading

Teen Flies High Without Parents’ Permission—Is The Airline To Blame?

By now I’m sure you’ve heard the story about the 15-year-old girl who bought a ticket and boarded a plane without ever being asked to show her ID. The teen from Alaska apparently neglected to ask her parents permission to take the flight and now the girl’s mom says the airline is partially to blame for her daughter ending up hundreds of miles from home. In all fairness to the mother, she’s not slapping the airlines with a lawsuit (at least not yet anyway), though she is lobbying to get the carrier to reconsider its current policies. For those of … Continue reading

Washington D.C. Rethinks Special Education Program

Meeting the needs of special education students seems to be a concern in just about every school district I come in contact with. Washington D.C. is no exception. The D.C. Council is in search of a new way to reconstruct its special education program. The cost of the special education program in Washington D.C. is depleting the education funds. D.C.’s special education budget is well out of range with that of the national average. The overall special education enrollment in Washington D.C. is only five percent higher than the national average of 15 percent, however the budget is much more … Continue reading

Education Week in Review: May 26 – June 1

Total Vacation Packages—Are They Worth The Money?

Websites are plastered with travel deals beckoning visitors to exotic locations. Most of them are package deals, which include airfare and hotel accommodations. Some even include rental cars and tickets to specific events (e.g. whale watching or ski lift tickets). The prices always catch my eye, but I never stop to examine the offer’s fine print. I normally assume there’s a reason (not a good one) for the prices being so (seemingly) affordable. So if you are traveling to popular destinations are these package deals the best way to go? I posed the question to my high school classmate, Ryan … Continue reading
