What Is DisneyQuest?

arcade games

Lately many articles I write seem to be giving me other ideas for more, as I learn about new Disney topics I’d like to explore. Today’s inspiration comes from my New Year’s Eve article; one of the settings at Disney World for end-of-the-year celebrations was DisneyQuest. I’d never heard of the attraction before, so I did some research and now I’m bringing what I’ve learned to you.

The Disney World website describes DisneyQuest as an “indoor interactive theme park” with a “one-of-a-kind gaming experience.” Think restaurants like Dave & Busters or even just a classic indoor arcade, but with a sleek Disney twist.

DisneyQuest incorporates five floors of various high-tech or old-school video and arcade games, all with a special Disney theme. The park is full of traditional gaming consoles, but it also provides many unique. Climb into a giant ship for a swashbuckling adventure on Pirates of the Caribbean – Battle for Buccaneer Gold, an experience that combines a theme park ride with video game. You’ll have to steer your ship and race against your components in a quest for the prize.

Many of DisneyQuest’s games explore similar virtual experiences. In CyberSpace Mountain you first design your own roller coaster on a computer, and then get a chance to ride it in 360-degree motion inside a simulator. The Virtual Jungle Cruise is just that: clinging to your raft on a prehistoric river, you must dodge dinosaurs and even risk the chance of getting splashed.

Play a modern spin on classic space shooting games in Buzz Lightyear’s Astroblasters. This game is more than just sitting stationary in your seat and pressing on a gun trigger to fire against the advancing asteroids. You pilot your own bumper spaceship and must physically load asteroid ammunition to fire against other advancing planetary bodies.

Other virtual reality or 3-D gaming experiences at DisneyQuest are similar and self-explanatory; if you like what you’ve heard about so far, you should also check out Ride the Comix, where you fly through comic book worlds battling super villains, and Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride, where you soar through Agrabah on a mission to save the Genie.

Athletic and artistic gamers have options at DisneyQuest as well. Play a life-sized pinball game on the Mighty Ducks Pinball Slam; combining hockey and pinball, the game allows you to hip-check your opponents as you compete for the win.

If you’d like something a bit less violent and more imaginative, try the Animation Academy. This time, all the screen does is provide you with a video from an instructor on a step-by-step process to drawing one of your favorite Disney characters.

DisneyQuest is the ideal Orlando stop for Disney and arcade enthusiasts. However, unlike the traditional rides in the main section of Disney World, this Downtown Disney destination comes with its own admission price. Tickets range from $36 to $42. In addition, many of the 3-D ride games come with height restrictions, so check the details on the DisneyQuest website before you make a visit if you have younger children.
