7 Common DIY Mistakes (7)

This is it! We at the end of our series on the seven most common mistakes that people make when doing projects around their home by themselves. It has been a long road, and we have covered so much. If you have missed any of these articles, just take a look at the links below this one. You’ll find everything there that you need to catch up on the discussion.

And we can come full circle talking about a common mistake that can really be overcome within any of the other mistakes. What I mean is, that avoiding this mistake will make it easier to avoid all of the others. The common mistake I am talking about it having the mindset that a do it yourself project (DIY project) has to be done completely independently without any assistance at all. That is certainly not true.

There are plenty of great resources that are both free or low cost and professional, ready to help you with your project. Here are some examples.

The free kitchen and bath design services at your local home improvement stores can be used to create your plan and of course order your materials.

The free or low cost classes offered at home improvement stores will give you the skills you need to complete your project, or at least the discovery that hiring a professional might make more sense.
Free color consultants at paint stores can help you select your colors, even if you just tell them you want something “warm.” For more complicated design help, there might be a small fee involved, but it will be well worth it.

As mentioned in earlier articles, you can also do a lot of the work yourself while hiring a plumber, electrician or carpenter by the hour for the complicated parts of the job. It isn’t an all or nothing. For example, you might want to gut your bathroom yourself and install your own tile and cabinets, but then have a professional plumber run the water connections and install toilets, sinks, bathtubs and shower fixtures.
